Berlin reports from September 25 that German estimates put Soviet deaths at 200000 with 600000 to 750000 Reds driven from the battle area. Fifty Soviet divisions are said to have been annihilated as the conflict around Kiev continues. Prisoners include the Fifth Army commander. Continued on page two.

Soviet Ambassador Ivan Maisky estimated at least three million German casualties in the Russian campaign, including killed wounded or missing, noting about one third of the Nazi army has been put out of action. He cited British figures aligning Russian losses at about three million, totaling six million casualties and prisoners.

The death notices list Charles W. Quigley aged 83 of New Castle R D 4, Mrs. Herman Kumrow 35 of North Beaver township, John Wallace 73 of Mercer R D 5, and Scott Mayberry 81 of Grove City, all reported on Tuesday September 23, 1941.
Pittsburgh dispatch reports the National Defense Mediation Board urged full resumption of work on the Curtiss Wright propeller plant project in Beaver County. A labor dispute between the Independent Association of Duquesne Light Company employees and the AFL Building & Construction Trades Association halted operations since September 10 over wire installation jurisdiction. The Independent Association offered to withdraw objections if not setting a precedent, allowing AFL to install transformers to aid the defense program. A Pittsburgh Building Trades Council meeting was set to review concessions and any formal action.
In Honolulu a young army air corps officer Second Lieutenant Martin R. Connelly 26 of Syracuse N Y was killed by customs guard John K Yuen during a baggage inspection scuffle aboard the President Cleveland. Yuen says the gun discharged accidentally as officers refused to open a package later found to contain photographs. Yuen is held without charge as investigators examine the case.
Berlin reports a Nazi government spokesman said the sinking of the American-owned Pink Star was “all according to international regulations.” He argued Americans were aware of the blockade zone, noting Iceland and Greenland waters inside the zone, and that the Pink Star bore no U S registry.
