The Czech Sudeten crisis reaches a new impasse as Neville Chamberlain and Adolf Hitler fail to resume talks after hours. Britain seeks guarantees no German troop movement pending settlement, while Hitler signals possible troop deployment if Czech forces advance.
Pane wc observer Donato Frioletti of 1215 Croton avenue reports a 7 lb beet grown in Columbus Tomasi’s garden at 1209 Croton avenue from seed given by Prioletti. Also notes a correction about McKees Rocks in Beaver county versus Allegheny county and mentions cars with radio outfits lacking standard aerials.
United States weather statistics for 24 hours ending 5 p m Thursday show a maximum of 56 and minimum of 47 with .19 inches of precipitation and river stage at 42. Year ago figures list a higher maximum and lower minimum with no precipitation.
Prague reports the new Czech military government under General Jan Syrogy will keep all border frontiers manned as Britain and France draft terms for a partition. Special guards guard public buildings in Prague and 122 truckloads move toward Carlsbad as troops stay posted in the Sudeten areas awaiting London Paris details.
Prague officials denied a Reuters dispatch claiming Sudeten free corps and German troopers had invaded Czechoslovakia from Germany. The Czech government called the reports exaggerated and noted some stronger incidents, while Reuters stood by its Prague dispatch pending more information.
An unidentified plane believed to be an army craft exploded and crashed in wooded land one and a half miles south of Hudson New York. The unconscious pilot was found near railroad tracks and taken to Hudson hospital in critical condition. Wreckage spread over half a mile. Albany officials said an army plane piloted by Captain M C Marper left Mitchel Field earlier, should have passed Hudson well before the crash. A yellow star insignia was on one wing.
WARSAW, Sept. 23. The Polish Foreign Office said Russia’s demarche over potential Polish moves into Czechoslovakia came as a surprise and that Poland had already taken warning measures on the Russian frontier. The reply indicated Warsaw would not consider defense actions in response to the Soviet threat.
David Williamson twenty three of Bethel Mercer county was shot in legs and hips by buckshot while attempting to steal air at Roy R. Cummings AAA Service Station in New Wilmington. His brother Roy twenty one was arrested by Officer Glenn Martin after a failed escape. Paul Madill a Westminster sophomore night watchman fired a warning volley and aided in halting the theft. Charges expected later this afternoon. The garage owner has faced prior thefts during business in New Castle and New Wilmington. Continued on page two.
The Red Cross announced evacuation of 7,000 people from Hartford Conn and expected 10,000 more by nightfall as floods rise. The total in distress across New England reached 12,000 with reports that the floods are getting worse. Worker June Lonas said Hadley Mass was evacuated overnight to Amherst.
Moscow warns Poland it will denounce the Russo Polish treaty if Poland invades Czechoslovakia. Potemkin formally advised the Polish chargé d affaires that Moscow will take this step if the threat is carried out, signaling a grave element added to the European crisis.
Washington September 23 the president on his physician’s advice canceled his usual press conference and remained in the White House nursing a head cold. Dr McIntire said he was improving but exposure should be avoided to protect his health.
Safety classes coordinated by the State Motor Police WPA New Castle Motor Club and the city open October 3 with registration from September 24 at the New Castle Motor Club office 9 am to 5 pm daily. Youngstown police said the unidentified girl found unconscious five days earlier at an Interurban bus terminal has identified herself. Detective Chief William Reed reported the woman spoke after an investigation and the case was closed without releasing her name for records purposes.
London reports a firm refusal by Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain to concede to Nazi demands. He remains strict on Poland and Hungary minority territories in Czechoslovakia and will not exceed the Anglo-French plan to cede Sudetenland areas. Conservative circles say Chamberlain is not led by Hitler but holds a steadfast position.
Three masked gunmen held up the Dearnley Brothers Worsted Spinning mill in Germantown and escaped with a $3400 payroll. They entered the office where workers were counting pay envelopes just arrived from a bank, then fled in a car driven by a fourth man.
TOKYO report says two Soviet soldiers were killed when eight crossed the Manchukuo Manchuria border near Suifendo. Manchukuo border guards repulsed the detachment and protested to the United States government over the alleged border violation.

A huge section of the Fort Peck earth filled dam on the Missouri river collapsed near Glasgow Montana. One worker died seven were injured and 13 were missing after about 2000 feet of the dam face gave way taking railroad tracks and a dredge into the waters. Albert Skoesen was identified among the recovered. Names of the missing men include Nelson Van Stone Douglas J Moore Archie Marz J T Johnson Oliver Butcher D Paul son and Walter Lubbinge.
Soviet Russia verbally intimates to Poland a denouncement of the Polish Russian non aggression pact and possible march into Czechoslovakia. Warsaw threatens armed conflict with Czechoslovaks as minority measures mirror Sudeten German treatment. Also notes Mr and Mrs Paul M Rhodes of Berlin Md visiting with Mrs S J Rhodes in Highland Avenue for one to two weeks.
The 30th American Legion convention ends in Los Angeles with ex-soldiers remaining committed to universal service and wartime production. Stephen P. Chadwick of Seattle named national commander by acclaim, with Charles W. Crush of Virginia and other officers elected. Debate continues on taxation for wealth drafting as a substitute resolution is rejected.
