Death of Marine Is Questioned At Parris Island
At Parris Island Marine Training Center officials said results of an investigation into the death of Pvt Stephen E Melson 18 of Millsboro Del were pending. Melson who had a chronic kidney ailment reportedly had injuries after alleged beating by supervisory personnel. Marine spokesmen said charges against involved individuals were possible and at least one marine had been relieved of duty. In a separate note Senate Leader Mansfield urged an immediate halt to further U.S. increases in Southeast Asia citing rising casualties in Laos and warning against a larger American military commitment.
