The immigration bill is expected to pass the Senate as the first measure to limit entry from Latin America and Canada. Senator Strom Thurmond seeks to amend to halt deportations of foreigners brought here unwillingly, citing Elias Wessin Y Wessin.
The Defense Department asked the Selective Service to draft 1 979 medical professionals starting January to meet the surge in active forces. The quota includes 1 529 physicians 350 dentists and 100 veterinarians with 949 physicians for the Army 260 for the Navy and 320 for the Air Force. All dentists and veterinarians go to the Army.

The group ranks among about 1000 semifinalists from some 17600 schools nationwide based on merit test scores and school records.
City Streets Director William J. Watkins urged 47 department employees to vote against the mayor council form in the upcoming special election. Watkins warned the mayor would gain hire fire power under the new plan, while under the current commission form each councilman would hire his own staff. He advised employees to stay friendly with the mayor if the change passes and said a debate with Charter Study Commission chairman Thomas A. Shumaker was set for 4:30 p.m. in City Hall to address questions and rumors about job security.
