Washington September 22 The Republican Party’s Board of Strategy met to curb a whispering campaign aimed at Herbert Hoover by unidentified agencies. Hoover aides previously ordered an affirmative campaign and Hubert Work urged silence on whispers against Smith. Hoover will not personally respond to the attacks.
Early today a fire destroyed the Leesburg Presbyterian church, a modern brick building valued at $20,000. The blaze began around midnight, residents returning from a grange meeting noticed it, and despite efforts to save the structure the fire gutted the building. Officials expect a total loss as investigation proceeds and arson is a speculation. Insurance status unclear.
Eight contractors bid on the construction of a new First U P church at Dienmort Boulevard and Albert Street to replace the fire damaged Worth Jefferson Street structure. Bids, all below estimated cost, were announced after a Friday meeting of the building committee and trustees. figures were not released. The contract let remains under review as the committee reconvenes.
Weather outlook for September 24 to 29 in North and Middle Atlantic states. Generally fair on Friday or Saturday with showers likely. Temperatures mostly below normal at week start, rising to near or above normal by Thursday. Frost probable in northern areas late in the period, cooler end of week. Chicago dispatch reports gunfire during a taxi driver clash in the South Side theater district. Eugene Thivierge died, Bernard Reichter was wounded and jailed, and police sought Robert Mooney, suspected of firing the fatal shot.
The forty fourth annual Lawrence County W. C. T. U. convention met in Central Presbyterian church to launch local efforts to preserve the eighteenth amendment and oppose a wet aligned presidential nominee. Former Judge William E. Porter, a longtime Democratic leader, said he could not support Governor Al Smith and affirmed his loyalty to Democratic principles. The convention drew delegates from both major parties, urging selection of a president committed to enforcement of prohibition.
President Coolidge arrived back in Washington at seven o clock after two whirlwind visits to his old home in Plymouth Vermont. Mrs Coolidge remained in Somerville with her mother Mrs Lemtra Goodbye who is hospitalized.
A party led by Mew Castle detoured to Philadelphia and visited Valley Forge this summer. One tourist noted the vast grounds and historic site, with preserved buildings in good shape and a cathedral type chapel under construction. Castle school children are now members of the Valley Forge association.

Slippery Rock Pa Sept 22 One person was killed and two seriously injured in a head on collision on Slippery Rock Butler road. Theodore Buzzard driver of one car was killed. His wife and two children escaped uninjured. Mayle and wife of Brilliant were injured and taken to Butler hospital. Stanford Coulter Howard Cooper and Homer Boyd were in the other car. Both vehicles were badly damaged.
Prisoners convicted at this term were sentenced by Judge Hildebrand this morning. Pau Onasch received 200 dollars fine and costs and two months in the county jail for driving while intoxicated. Parole petitions may be entertained after 40 days upon payment of fines and costs. Barry Schmidt got 200 dollars and costs and three months in the county jail for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, dating from September 2. Levard La Coruti faced 300 dollars in fines and costs for liquor possession. George Lawson was paroled upon payment of 100 dollars fine and costs for misrepresenting ownership and operators licenses. A. W. Jordan received 200 dollars and costs plus three months in jail for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Josephine Nycz paroled after paying 200 dollars in fines and costs for possessing liquor. Barry Perk, 16, charged with stealing chickens, was brought in for sentence but the sentence was deferred. Mrs. Anna Hinch was fined 100 dollars and costs and ordered to workhouse for four months for possessing liquor.
Akron Ohio September 22 neighbors raise money for Loveda Boyle defense in second degree murder charge after she admits shooting Robert McCormick claiming self defense when he attacked her near Talmadge Ohio. Family and neighbors who knew her since high school plan aid despite poverty. Continued on page two.
William Hickman, condemned for the Macon Parkes case, turned to religion in his San Quentin cell. The warden announced Hickman will be confirmed to a new creed Sunday as he awaits execution on October 19. The report notes his conversion was disclosed today by Warden James B. Holohan.
Governor John W Martin inspects the flooded Everglades region as the Florida hurricane death toll nears 1500. Bodies are being buried in the muck while relief relief workers beg for quick lime and supplies.
