Stanley Newton aged 30 of Farrell was killed instantly at the Carnegie-Illinois steel plant in Sharon when he was caught in a scrap door. Plant officials were investigating the cause.
United States weather statistics show a 94 hour period ending at 9 am with a maximum of 82, minimum 50, and no precipitation. River stage reported at 4.6 feet. For the 24 hour period ending Sunday 9 am, maximum 72, minimum 49, with trace precipitation.
New York The 21 year old daughter of Winston Churchill hid from publicity today in the city. Her romance with Vic Oliver remained in doubt. She met Oliver on the liner Bremen and then vanished after declining to discuss a reported plan to marry him. Her brother Randolph would speak for her.
Clarence A. Leslie quartermaster of the Corporal Harry L. McBride Post and Joseph Park and wife returned from Denver where they attended the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars held last week. They report a very colorful gathering and note the next convention will be in Buffalo New York.
Tokyo reports Emperor Hirohito sanctioned immediate dispatch of naval landing forces into Chinese waters. Statement says Japan will act to curb anti Japanese terrorism in China under self defense. Details on ships and troops not released.
Amid rebel advances near Madrid, the United States orders the Madrid embassy closed and evacuates Americans by warship. Consulate at Malaga also shut. staff to return home or leave. 142 Americans remain in Madrid. 328 evacuated to date.
Hollywood gossip says Mary Pickford and Charles Buddy Rogers will marry before Pickford sails to Europe on October 14. Pickford denies engagement while plans reportedly proceed and she attends a New York premiere before departure.
Norman E. Clark of New Castle was elected president of the Pennsylvania League of Building and Loan Associations at the 59th annual convention closing in Wernersville Pa. He has long served as secretary and director of the New Castle Mutual Building and Loan Association and is active in Red Cross Kiwanis and local affairs. Officers named alongside Clark include William Reinhardt James J. O Malley George W. Cliffe and Joseph H. Sondheim.
Oil City conference closes after five days in New Castle with worship ordination and missionary meeting. Appointment list reads pastors for the new year across Oil City district including L. J. Lindsey J. E. Kiffer W. E. Freeman and others with districts from Franklin to Titusville and beyond.
James W. Moorhead area director conducts a day long inquiry into eight Mercer county highway employees receiving relief. He aims to present facts by Tuesday and respond to auditor general Frank E. Baldwin who reports 96 ineligible and 15 overpaid Mercer county relief cases. Restitution actions have already been pursued by relief authorities.
New York reports Harold Sullivan a Greenwich Village night club proprietor was killed in a dawn brawl. Patrolman John Buckley and civilian Peter Dunn were wounded in the incident.
President Roosevelt, en route to Hyde Park, creates two new committees to study crop insurance and a drought and land use program. His move comes as Governor Landon prepares to outline a farm program in Des Moines, with Mrs Roosevelt recovering from grippe at home. The President also marks his mother’s 82nd birthday.

The council moved to ask the WPA to approve paving program C, including Euclid avenue from North Mercer to Delaware, so the cartway in front of George Washington junior high may be paved at city expense. Mayor McGrath said the city will pay and that other school frontages would be considered, despite the school board’s stance on exemption grants.
State highway patrol detachment arrested 25 motorists Sunday on speeding charges. Each fined 10 dollars plus costs totaling 12.50 dollars. Corporal Keck stated strict enforcement of 50 mph limit for autos and five mph leeway for trucks, with trucks graded by size.
Attorney Alvah M. Shumaker was appointed as assistant district attorney by Judge James A Chambers at court this morning on motion of District Attorney Mont L. Riley. The appointment is for the present term of quarter sessions court.

A fire of unknown origin destroyed the Domestic Fuel mine at Jackson Center near Sharon Pennsylvania. Officials estimate damage at 60 000 dollars. Ninety workers were on duty when fire was found. The fire consumed the tipple boiler engine houses and 450 tons of coal. Rebuilding planned immediately.
Firemen were called to the corner of Long avenue and Moravia street twice Saturday evening where a Chevrolet coach with license 50710 burned in the upholstery. Small damage occurred. The second alarm, from box 55, followed a suspected second arson to draw, then watch the fire trucks. First alarm 9 35, second at 10 55.
Firefighters respond to a blaze at the corner of Mahoning Avenue and North Cedar Street caused by defective wiring striking a motorcycle owned by William Kosciusko of West Miller Avenue. The cycle was destroyed with an estimated loss of about $50 and no insurance carried.
During a council session at the city building bids for 125 tons of amiesite on Rural Avenue were opened and read. The council referred the bids to the city engineer and purchasing agent for report and recommendation to the body this afternoon.
