Store keeper Mark Bryant of Lamontville, six miles from Kingston, drilled 145 feet for water and struck gas. Neighbors call it a promising local gas discovery. Bryant capped the well and will resume drilling tomorrow seeking water.
Two American missionary women, Sarah Perkins of Charleston and Dorothy Middleton of Cicero, arrived in Hong Kong after being expelled from Red China on charges of sabotage. They, the eighth and ninth of ten U S civilians released by Peiping, described prison life, with Perkins recalling a cell described as 15 lengths by 72, and Middleton noting a 6 by 11 foot cell. Perkins denied signing confessions while Middleton said she had signed apologies in 1952 and 1953.
International News Service reports hurricane Ione brings wind and heavy rain to Pennsylvania. The Weather Bureau projects up to four inches in the Pocono region and 35 to 60 mph winds in parts of the state. Small stream flooding is anticipated and Gov. In Moscow the Soviet Union and East Germany signed a treaty restoring sovereignty to East Germany. Premier Nikolai Bulganin represented the Soviet side and Otto Grotewohl led East Germany. The pact grants full East Berlin control over its border with West Germany and communications with West Berlin.
A Senate bill proposed in Harrisburg would authorize the Pennsylvan ia Turnpike Commission and the state highways secretary to raise speed limits on roads under their jurisdiction. Currently speed limits are set by legislation. The measure from Sen. J Irving Whalley would let officials adjust limits when studies show slower speeds impede normal traffic flow. The bill was referred to the Senate Highways Committee.

John Foster Dulles stands ready to counter the Molotov proposal as Britain and allies back the U S position.
