Charles E K Flynn, 60, of New Castle, Pennsylvania, killed himself in a Pittsburgh rooming house after leaving three letters. He suffered rheumatism and despondency, leaving debts and a note to his friend Charles Hill to collect about 2500 dollars.
Salonika advices report a staggering Bulgarian rout in the Balkans as Allied forces in southern Servia approach Prilep, only nine miles from the town and about 30 miles inside Servian borders. The Macedonia advance totals roughly 20 miles.
American batteries repelled a German dawn assault in Haumont and Rembercourt, routing attackers before they could reach American lines. Night patrols report enemy machine gun posts near Haumont as Austro German raiders are captured northeast of Doncourt on the Meuse Moselle front.
British troops pushed forward on the St Quentin front, capturing Moeuvres seven miles west of Cambrai. The battle line saw fierce resistance as Germans attempted to hold the Hindenburg line while French gains were reported north of the Aisne and on the Vesle front.
On the Lorraine front in September 20 reports say a patrol of full blooded Indian soldiers used native tactics to locate and destroy enemy machine gun nests. Lieutenant Clayborn Arthur of Louisville is credited with capturing a German saloon complete with bartenders.
Paris dispatch reports German retreat from the high ground north of the Aisne Chemin Des Dames due to Gen Mangin's pressure. German press hints Chemin Des Dames not part of Seigfried or Hindenburg lines. French and British forces press in the St Quentin area while German counterattacks west of July fail. Elmer I Phillips departs for Culver Military Academy for his third year.
German reinforcements mass along the Hindenburg line amid renewed counter attacks. British troops reach the western outskirts of Fresnoy in local fighting as artillery intensifies. The Fourth British Army reports 8,000 of 10,000 German prisoners captured in the sequence of engagements.
Boza Draskovich took the stand this morning in his murder trial for Louis Sacco and detailed how he says he was drawn into the A. D. Farrell holdup and Sacco's death. He shifted blame to bandit Natt Galic, claimed Galic forced his involvement, a defense echoing Gravis Korzal's prior manslaughter conviction.
Paris dispatch reports more than 30 killed and about a hundred injured when the first section of the Marseilles express telescoped by the second in the Pacy tunnel between Dijon and La Roche. American soldiers rushed to aid the wounded and earned praise for their rescue efforts.
A police officer found a pocket book along the B A and P tracks last night. The registration inside identifies John Ruby of 920 Wallis Street Farrel Pa.

An official North Russian government statement from Archangel reports a severe defeat of German led Bolshevik forces at Ukhtinka fy 100 miles west of Kem. The battle occurred near the Finland frontier, with a thousand rifles and many boats and horses captured. Allied forces have landed on the Murman coast.
A large new plant is being erected on the Mahoning avenue extension by Standard Steel Car Co for the Emergency Fleet Corporation. The brick iron and glass main building will be 180 by 520 feet, cost about 1 million dollars, with additional smaller structures. Erection by C F Simmons & Co of Pittsburgh.
Washington September 20 President Wilson proclaims October 12 Liberty Day to mark the discovery of our country and to spur support for the Fourth Liberty loan. He urges federal employees who can be spared to take the day off to participate in the celebration.
Five armed bandits robbed the Argo State Bank of 25000 in currency and 1000 in Liberty bonds in Chicago today. They escaped in an automobile as a police posse pursued and surrounding cities were alerted.
Senate commerce committee resumes its Hog Island labor inquiry with Charles Piese testifying. The dispute centers on labor conditions and alleged draft evasion and high salaries for the Emergency Fleet Corportation workers.
James R. Mann Jr. aged 28, reportedly son of Republican House leader, shot himself at a boarding house in Chicago. Police found two notes addressed to his landlady and to Mrs. James Mann of Washington, D. C. A dog was killed first, and tuberculosis is cited as a cause in one note.
Washington reports that passage by the House of the revenue bill is regarded as certain upon reconvening. Reading of 190 pages was completed with only non controversial items left to dispose of, including taxes on gas and oil.
Franklin D. Roosevelt assistant secretary of the Navy is ill with pneumonia at an Atlantic port in France. His attending physician reports the condition favorable and says he is progressing well and plans to return to Washington in a few days. Mrs. Adeline R. Carr has returned to Denver after four months with her daughter in Boyles avenue.
American troops occupied Amersweiler in Alsace west of Colmar after discovering German withdrawal. A German order found by the Americans outlined systematic destruction of towns and buildings during retreats and instructions for defiling the countryside and laying time mines.
Vienna announces the Austro-Hungarian peace offer remains open and is discussed with Germany Bulgaria and Turkey. Baron Burian says the Central alliance will not be weakened and that the offer followed talks with allies. The dispatch notes British foreign secretary A J Balfour framed statements after the note appeared.
Pittsburg Pa Sept 20 A four year old girl Lilian Straub died from injuries after a fire in her bed. Rescue workers report the child likely toppled a candle left beside the bed.
Obituary brief lists Willis H Hoover 64 of 1805 Hanna street as deceased. Also notes Mary Evaline Humphrey age 2 of 501 Electric Mary address and David Kenst two months, all residents of Jacksville Pennsylvania.
Water Street undergoes repairs by the street department. The worst section with deep holes is being rebuilt using salvaged asphalt blocks from Croton Avenue and Mercer Street paving to improve condition.
Preliminary arrangements for the fourth Liberty Loan drive will be made at a banquet tonight at the Y M C A at 6 30 o clock. Thomas F Morehead named chairman of the general committee and other speakers will attend. A full attendance is desired.
Clara E Straley by attorney James A Chambers seeks divorce from Bert Straley on cruelty grounds. Married June 1908 and separated March 1918.
Albert Beaver of Wampum, serving as clerk for the county draft board, leaves this evening for Fort Slocum in New York to perform stenographic work.
Washington dispatch reports Metz fortress under direct fire from American large caliber guns. Assistant Secretary Crowell told the House Military Affairs Committee that Gen. Pershing had not yet revealed the identity of the American units engaged in wiping out the St Mihiel salient.
The dispatch lists Private Clare C. Carr of Headquarters Company and Private John Bailey Carr of Company G 35th Engineers as serving with the American Expeditionary Force. Clare left Camp Sherman in February for Camp Merritt then sailed for France arriving late March. John went to Camp Sherman in December and volunteered for the 35th Engineers, sailing overseas in April 1918 after a Merritt transfer.
Havre France September 20 Belgium scornfully rejected Germanys offer of a separate peace stating the proposal cannot serve as a basis for serious discussion. Mrs Charles Dresch of Grove City is visiting her daughter Mrs H P Marley of Epworth Street.
