Conrail derails 95-car coal train near Wampum injures crewman
One person was injured when a 95 car Conrail coal train derailed near Hamilton Road and old Pa 18, south of Wampum, yesterday afternoon. The northbound Pittsburgh to Ashtabula train damaged about 75 feet of southbound tracks and several hundred feet of northbound rails. Conrail crews and Hutcher Co. workers rerolled cars by 8 am today. Conrail estimates about $60,000 in damage plus repair labor. The conductor Pete Malizia of Ashtabula was treated for a bruise and released.

Cave-in Kills Ex-City Man at Neshannock Worksite
A 26-year-old former New Castle man, Andrew Baka of Anaheim California, was killed by suffocation in a sewer ditch cave-in on Shenango Road in Neshannock Township. The 100-foot ditch collapsed while workers tapped a sewer line for a new home, and rescuers pulled him from the trench after six to seven minutes. Deputy coroner Gene Bollinger ruled the death a suffocation. Township officials ordered sewer department precautions.
