The White House stated yesterday that Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black will retire after more than 34 years on the bench due to ill health. The resignation marks a major shift in the Supreme Court as the nation faces replacement discussions and possible confirmation processes.

The six county Diocese of Pittsburgh reports a 10.3 percent fall in total enrollment to 80 841 this school year from 90 127 last year. Grade schools fell 11 percent and high schools 6.9 percent as 229 schools reduced to 218.
Israeli warplanes attacked Egyptian ground forces along the Suez Canal, the first breach since the 13 month old cease fire. Egypt said the jets fired on east of the canal while Israel claimed it was returning fire from antiaircraft batteries. Egypt also downed an Israeli transport plane, killing seven of eight crew.
