Diner Destroyed by Fire Near Harrisburg

Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a diner at a Route 422 intersection two miles east of Harrisburg. Damage was estimated at $25,000. Firefighters handled the blaze and no injuries were reported.

Council Splits On Wage Tax In Day's Session

Mayor John F Haven walked out of the council session and Safety Director Richard I Davis followed after Finance Director Albert A Hoyland moved to eliminate the wage tax for 1951. Hoyland said public opinion favored no wage tax as a balanced tax plan would shift burden from property to other sources. The mayor noted any 1951 wage tax requires an act by December 1 and questioned the tax’s continuation.

Frank Mastren Killed Sunday at Darlington Sub Station

Frank Mastren 50 of West Meyer Avenue RD 3 was electrocuted at 7 10 am Sunday at the Pennsylvania Power sub station on Route 51 while replacing a regulator. He contact a live 4 800 volt switch during a voltage change over. Mastren born February 3 1900 in New Castle. He worked for the company since 1939 and was married 31 years to Dora Isaac. He was a member of St. Joseph's church.

Start Murder Trial In County Court Today

Eddie Warden veteran of the South Pacific goes on trial for his life in Lawrence county court. He is charged with the murder of Robert H. Wylie Jr after an argument on the Pennsylvania railroad tracks near West Falls street. Warden fired a rifle striking Wylie who died soon after and Warden has been jailed. The court appointed counsel due to lack of funds.

Contributions To Sponsors Fund Grows For Camp Units

Contributions to the Lawrence County Civilian Sponsors fund rise over the weekend to furnish day room comforts for the 229th Field Artillery Battalion at Camp Atterbury Indiana. Plans include support for 834th Chemical Unit at Camp Rucker Alabama with radios magazines games and more. An inter-communication system and 24 hour accident policies were already provided as the fund grows.

Waegwan Area Bombed by Forty B-29s in Korea

Forty B-29 Superfortresses dropped 400 tons of bombs on a two square mile Waegwan area in Korea. The strike hit a four mile by quarter mile strip, following a prior August saturation bombing. The operation aimed to support UN forces linking with Inchon troops, with weather permitting further air action over the Inchon beachhead and surrounding lines.

Marines Reach Three Miles From Seoul In Inchon Campaign

U S Marines backed by the Seventh Division push toward Seoul within three miles after repelling Red counterattacks at Kimpo airfield. An American battalion crossed the Naktong below Taegu and seized a bridgehead on the river west bank as part of a major south west Korea breakout. Armor spearheads reached the Han river southwest of Seoul and an additional four miles brought the capital within range of American guns.

Kimpo Airfield Reopens for Marine Operations in Korea

A navy spokesman reports recaptured Kimpo airfield is now used by Marine planes. The airfield, once held by Communists, is in fairly good shape with a cleared 10 mile perimeter of tanks and artillery. Recapture pushes Korea front forward 350 miles and Kimpo remains the only airfield able to handle jet fighters, four engined transports, and B 29 bombers.
