A Pan American Boeing 707 bound for New York crashed in bad weather on Montserrat in the British West Indies. Officials in Miami say 30 aboard were on board with 21 passengers and nine crewmen unconfirmed as survivors. The aircraft had left Martinique and cleared Antigua on its course.

Gov. William W. Scranton named John Ralph Rackley to be state superintendent of public instruction for a four year term and sent the nomination to the state Senate for confirmation.
