President Clinton argues the United States must shield its interests by stopping brutal acts against Haitians, safeguarding borders, and preserving stability in the hemisphere while promoting democracy and upholding global commitment reliability.
President Clinton backs a military action to oust the Haitian government. Officials say invasion could start within 48 hours with about 20,000 U.S. troops assembling off Haiti. A subsequent 17-nation force of 1,500 military personnel would follow.
Rep. Rick Santorum voices caution on war plans, saying he opposes the president’s effort and the cost in American lives but supports a debate and a vote to consider the president’s arguments before sending troops.
New Castle businessmen Clingensmith and Latsko long pursued Pennsylvania Lottery machines. The federal anti crime bill, signed by President Clinton, ends private brokers for interstate lottery sales, effective 90 days after signing. Both men say state machines would have kept them from using out of state services.
A downtown storefront at 39 N. Mercer St. received a new awning over its entrance. The update comes as part of a broader effort by local businesses to spruce up the streetscape.
The forecast calls for Monday partly sunny with lows around 45 to 55 and highs in the 60s. Tuesday turns partly cloudy with a low in the 40s and a high of 65 to 75.
Tupac Shakur faces up to 90 days in jail and a $100 fine after pleading guilty to trying to hit a rival rapper with a baseball bat during an April 1993 Michigan State University concert. Prosecutors said he threw a microphone belonging to a local rapper, igniting a stage fight. His lawyer cited repeated insults from the other rapper. Shakur pleaded guilty yesterday in Circuit Court and was set for October 26 sentencing. The felonious assault charge was reduced.
Lawrence County residents face no emissions testing under the new program set to begin January 1, while Beaver and Mercer counties must participate. About 86 centralized facilities will conduct $17 tests across 25 counties in the Ozone Transport Region. Exemptions apply to locals who do not live in affected areas or who buy vehicles in those counties, with ongoing questions about a 60 day work period rule and enforcement.
