Strike Order From Lewis Weighs On Labor Talks

Washington September 16 soft coal operators expect a strike order from John L. Lewis and possibly the resignation of Senator Bridges as welfare fund trustee. The United Mine Workers chief returns to Washington after a White Sulphur Springs trip as talks with Northern operators press for a seven hour day and welfare payments due next Tuesday. Negotiations are slated to resume September 21.

New Fire Call Numbers Issued by East Brook Department

Hickory Township Volunteer Fire Department chief Tom West announced several new fire call numbers for the district. He listed 8115J-4 at his residence 9032-R for West store 9032-J for the garage and 425-M, noting 8114J-12 has no response. Citizens should post the numbers near the telephone.

Camp Hill Names New School Herbert Hoover Elementary

The Camp Hill school board named the boroughs new school Herbert Hoover Elementary in honor of the former President and elder statesman. The school is slated for completion on December 1.

Mrs. Delma Brest of Wampum reports seeing an apple tree in full bloom this morning at the Newport church. The tree has already borne a large crop of apples which have been gathered.

West Side Bridge To Get New Walks

Workmen from the State Highway department replace worn wooden walks on the West side bridge for pedestrian safety. The south side walk is roped off and the plank surface will be rebuilt. Crews will also reinforce the metal decking to stop rattling and secure the bridge webbing.

Girl Hitch-Hikers On Robbery Charge

Two Lynn Massachusetts hitch-hikers Lennie Harkness 26 and Jean Muldoon 21 were held for trial in Schuylkill county court after pleading not guilty to robbing and shooting autoist Charles Klevis of Frackville on June 26. The judge ordered pleas change from guilty to not guilty amid assault and battery with intent to kill charges. Klevis, hospitalized with a bullet lodged near his spine, said he was shot after parking with the women on a lonely road.

Former Triggerman Cohen Shot To Death In Valley Stream

Valley Stream New York September 16 Philip Cohen known as Little Farrel once an ace triggerman for Notorious Murder Inc was abducted and murdered on a lonely highway. Police say the 46 year old ex convict was a vengeance slaying victim with six bullets found in his body. Three slugs pierced his chest and three more hits his back.

Italian Airmen Set for Atlantic Hop to New York

Two Italian aviators John Brondello and Camillo Bartoglio soared from Horta Azores toward New York in a Beechcraft Santa Susanna planning a 20 hour non stop crossing. They aim to raise three million dollars for an Italian boy's town modeled after a Nebraska institution. They previously diverted to the Azores after leaving Lisbon, carrying fuel for 29 hours.

Auto Injuries Fatal To Man

Harry Cobb aged 56 of 404 West Falls street died after a Thursday evening crash when an auto driven by Cliff Atwater of 80342 West State street struck a parked tractor-trailer on West Washington street near O'Brien avenue. Cobb died at Jameson Memorial hospital after sustaining a fractured skull and punctured lung. Atwater was heading west on West Washington when he hit the rear of the trailer parked by Frank K. Trott of 12 O'Brien avenue en route to Aliquippa for a steel load to the Sharon district.

Escapes Soviet Prison Tells of Torture

American soldier John G. Sienkiewicz and three British troops escaped from a Soviet prison in Berlin at midnight and fled to west Berlin. Sienkiewicz, 26, from Baltimore Maryland, described ten months of beatings and torture. he was hospitalized in bad shape, wearing a lice-covered filthy uniform. He said allied prisoners faced numerous tortures after capture in 1948.

Western Powers Press Moscow to Accelerate Austrian Peace Treaty

The United States Britain and France urged Russia to begin substantive talks on finalizing a long overdue Austrian peace treaty.
