Archie Bemis, 36, of Corry, was sentenced today to five to ten years in the western penitentiary after pleading guilty to second degree murder in the slaying of John P. Haeufle, a 46 year old Cincinnati soap salesman Bemis said he shot the man, mistaking him for his wife's alleged paramour, in open court. Judge William E. Hirt imposed the sentence.
Three construction company workers were crushed to death when their light coupe was struck by a 10 ton truck eight miles from Montrose Pennsylvania. The victims Daniel Hand Knoston Golzowski and Otto Kadun resided at Franklin Forks. Police said the collision occurred as the men turned from the main highway onto a side road. The heavy vehicle struck the coupe upturned it and crushed the machine into wreckage. All three were dead at the scene.
Dr. Ed ith MacBride-Dexter, secretary of health, said the statewide threat from infantile paralysis has virtually passed in Pennsylvania. She urged immediate isolation of all suspected cases as pockets of danger remain in several communities. She noted 146 cases since August 1, with 78 in August and 68 in September, smaller than 1916 and 1932 epidemic years.
