Vietnam Veterans Against the War staged a bitter skit titled Sergeant Smack on Capitol steps in Harrisburg during a four day antiwar demonstration. The sergeant role was played by James Brophy of Pittsburgh.
Flood warning for the Youghiogheny basin follows heavy rains last night with rapid river rises expected today along the Youghiogheny and its tributaries. Four days of heavy rain swelled creeks across eastern Pennsylvania causing widespread floods. Eight people feared drowned with two confirmed in Montgomery County and five others missing in Delaware County. Towns declared emergencies and National Guardsmen aided evacuations of about 500 families in Chester.

South Vietnam announced the creation of its first new division since 1965 to replace departing American forces along the DMZ. Troops will come from the 1st Infantry Division, with U.S. advisers supplied but no additional equipment granted. South Vietnam has two regular divisions in Military Region I.
Two women pickets at North American Rockwell Transmission and Axle plant vow to stay until a settlement ends the strike that idled 304 workers. About 15 wives, plus other workers, gathered at the Hobart Street site as shifts began. A 1 p.m. meeting is planned at Columbus Hall on Liberty Street.

About 500 pickets halted a Fisher Body plant in Pontiac Michigan and forced GM to shut the Pontiac Motor Division assembly line delaying 70 cars per hour and laying off 1 200 workers as absenteeism rose above 60 percent. The GMC school bus plant escaped the boycott.
