London experienced another Luftwaffe raid with sirens, anti air guns, and fighter engagement. Two enemy planes were shot down in daylight, and a delayed action bomb at Buckingham Palace grounds exploded, with minor damage and casualties.
George Moore of Harlansburg found a cracked breakfast egg with three yolks. Farm reports describe two cucumbers weighing two and a half and three and a half pounds on display. A homing pigeon at West Pittsburg power plant trained by a Buffalo man died after capture. Continued on Page Two.
United States weather statistics show a maximum temperature of 68 and a minimum of 50 with no precipitation for the 24 hour period ending 5 p m Friday. River stage reads 4 4 feet. Figures for the same date last year list a maximum of 82 and a minimum of 54.
Harold Mintz led Butler to a late drive against New Castle as a touchdown pass to Pattfrath tied the score. Barnard Mintz of 11644 Fifth Avenue Butler collapsed in the visitors stands and died en route to Jameson Memorial Hospital after the heart attack followed an exciting football moment near the four yard line with Butler posing a potential upset.
Mrs Ruth Wallgren of Lester Pa a mechanical draughtsman for Westinghouse Electric helped design turbines and engines for new destroyers. She christens the U S S Ericsson named for her ancestor John Ericson who designed the Monitor used in the Civil War.
George Scalise, ex-president of the Building Service Employees International Union, was found guilty on one grand larceny count and four forgery counts for embezzling 2,457 of the union’s funds last March 29 after an eighteen hour jury deliberation. He faces 10 to 20 years per count and was remanded to the Tombs for sentencing on September 27.
Police abandoned the search for additional bodies after determining George B. Bell rode alone when his car went off the Ninth Street bridge into the Allegheny River. Initially believed Stella Copenhaver and another man were with him, a check showed the 18 year old girl had stayed with a friend and no other person was missing. The Brackenridge man, 32, was recovered hours after the plunge as crews continued to drag the river until sure Bell was alone.
Richard Millinder, 22, a highway laborer from Bellefonte, Pa, was convicted of first degree murder in the assault-slaying of neighbor Faye Gates. Judge Ivan Walker sentenced him to life imprisonment after Millinder answered, I have nothing to say.
The Men’s Garden club hosts its second annual flower show open to the public at Lawrence Auto Garage at South and South Mercer. The display won first prize and the gold cup, last year won by the Lawrence County Garden club. Alvin Turner of Grove City judged the entries on condition, size, and variety. the Lawrence County Garden club earned second prize with a floral allegory featuring red gladioli, white dahlias, delphinium, and red white blue colors.
The War Department announced contracts totaling 76.4 million dollars for pursuit aircraft. Bell Aircraft Corp of Buffalo gets 19.9 million for planes and spares, Republic Aviation Corp of Long Island NC 56.5 million for planes and spares. Republic to build 225 planes. Bell quantity not disclosed. A separate fire on South Mercer Street damaged a car owned by Mrs Norma Boaltort of Rochester PA, about 25 dollars.
Mary K Walker, aged 82, of Smithport Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home after a long illness. Survived by two daughters and a son. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church with burial in Riverside Cemetery.

Rome reports Italian bombing attacks on two British convoys in the Mediterranean resulting in the sinking of one steamer and damage to another with possible crippling of a warship. The communique also notes continued Italian bombing in north and east Africa.
Recruiting Sergeant Owen Tighe re-enlists for a sixth three year term in Pittsburgh. The recruiting office is closed today due to his presence. Tighe will return Sunday evening and the office opens at 8:30 Monday morning for business.
Wendell Willkie drew large crowds in Chicago and towns across Illinois on a campaign swing. He delivered about six thousand words in five speeches, including four that Democrats quickly used as ammunition, notably remarks mischaracterized as attacks on Chicago. The Chicago audience greeted him with enthusiasm as he pressed into Cicero.

The Erie annual conference of the Methodist church highlights today’s session with formal selection of two Allegheny College trustees, Dr C T Greer and Dr Percy Parsons, to be ratified by the college board. Treasurer J Brent Cook and Statistician Paul K Scott presented reports showing over 70 000 members on the Rolls and 234 945 dollars in benevolences and administration.
A delayed action bomb exploded on Dorotheenstrasse near the International News Service office and the chancellery in Berlin. Straw bales atop the device were hurled into the air while the blast widened a roadway hole but caused no further major damage.

Ferrer showed films, and new members Frank T. Sargent and Frank Concilla joined. Davey Tobin was named chairman for the next dinner on Friday December 13.
Dr. Samuel Dodds of Butler and retired Grove City College Bible teacher visits Montgomery County via the Riley residence. He is father to three prominent education and church leaders: Arnold Dodds, Princeton University president. J LeRoy Dodds, secretary of the Presbyterian Foreign Missions Board. and John Dodds, Stanford professor.
Havana Sept 14 the lower houses of the Cuban legislature voted 35 to 18 to approve a compulsory military training program. Conscripts will serve for two years under the bill.
Congress approved the peace time draft bill sending it to President Roosevelt who is expected to sign. The law would draft 16.5 million men ages 21 to 35 for one year of training and service, paving the way for a 1.2 million strong force under General George C. Marshall. A funding request of 1.75 to 2.0 billion dollars will follow approval. The first call would target 21 to 30 year olds in November.
Jay Cooke, Republican candidate for U S senator, told a Lewistown mass meeting that a Roosevelt victory would create a dictatorship. He warned voters against supporting the third term idea and said listening to new dealers ends in oppression like German slaves under totalitarian rule.
