A message at noon said Harry Richman and Merril on a return flight should reach the United States late today. The plane was sighted off the Newfoundland coast.
Governor Alfred M. Landon forecasts a Republican win in Maine as voters go to the polls. From a rural retreat he campaigns through New England urging an end to Roosevelt policies and a return to constitutional self government. He says free business will re employ idle millions and a Maine victory will lead to November success.
Rev J A Galbraith is reassigned from Warren to Epworth church in Kane district updates. Other pastorate changes are announced for the year within the district.
Voters in Maine cast ballots in a high stakes barometer election with contests for US senator three congressmen and governor. Roosevelt Landon Townsend and Brann figures dominated a dramatic campaign as both sides claimed victory and national leaders campaigned across the state.
Reports from Harbor Grace Newfoundland and Newark New Jersey indicate a high flying plane possibly flown by Harry Richman and Dick Merrill is advancing toward an East to West Atlantic crossing. The 8 58 City of Baltimore relayed sighting of the Lady Peace off Newfoundland and faint signals from the pilots arrived at 11:20 a.m. EDT but were too weak to confirm details.
The detour bulletin shows no new detours for the district. only bridges replaced after spring washouts and ongoing detours where bridges are not yet rebuilt. In Atlantic City on September 14 1936 Rose Veronica Coyle a 22 year old Philadelph ia suburb resident from Yeadon won Miss America 1936 among 48 contestants. The Raven-haired winner stands five six weighs 115 pounds and enjoys cooking housework dancing and singing. Runner up was Miss California Phyllis Robson 19 of Hollywood and third was Miss Connecticut Tillie Grey 19 of Waterbury.
In Toledo the fortress officers tentatively rejected a safe conduct offer for 400 women and children besieged with rebel husbands and fathers. A Madrid communique noted division and a new conference amid heated discussion. Chilean ambassador Morgano, as dean of Madrid's diplomatic corps, proposed mediation and plans a second Toledo trip. Largo Caballero supported the mediation and the emissary has urged allowing evacuation of noncombatants.
David S. Hammond of Pittsburgh, already serving a two year federal sentence for his role in the Atlantic Drug and Chemical stock swindle, lost his bid for sentence suspension and to withdraw his guilty plea. He argued double jeopardy based on 26 federal counts tied to a single transaction.

Three boys found 54 year old George A. McGarr in a Stoneboro swamp near Sharon Pennsylvania. McGarr disappeared August 19 after serving in World War II. Coroner W A Applegate ruled accidental death due to a fall.
London reports George Andrew McMahon a former radical journalist found guilty of producing a pistol with intent to alarm King Edward VII. He received twelve months hard labor after a ten minute jury deliberation and the judge described him as a misguided person.
At the Indian hospital in Crown Point Indiana physicians announced the right foot of Benny Howard a 32 year old Chicago flyer was amputated following a crash near Crown Point while competing in the Bendix cross country air race His condition improved over the weekend and his wife Maxine 22 also recovered from less serious injuries
Carlisle First, Simon Loudin 48 of Mechanicsburg dies in hospital after drinking from a well while working on a Harrisburg pike road project. Sixteen WPA workers were exposed. eleven other workers remain seriously ill in the hospital.
Paul D. Carr, president of the Braddock school board, who collapsed at the Braddock versus New Castle football game Friday evening, is showing improvement. He rested well over the weekend, according to hospital authorities at Jameson Memorial Hospital.
Flames swept the Wagoner Gas and Oil Company yards injuring one man and menaced the town. West Newton firemen and nearby districts brought the blaze under control today.
Firefighters were summoned Saturday at 11 40 p m when the brakes on A H Stanford 829 Morton Street car began smoking after driving with brakes on. No damage or loss occurred.
A new pipe organ was dedicated at First Baptist Church this morning. Church officials and members gathered for the ceremony, with special remarks from the pastor and local music supporters.

The city council will sit as a board of revision and appeals to hear objections to assessments in the Sixth ward. On Wednesday First ward property owners’ objections will be heard. Complaints will be heard from 10 to 12 in the morning and 2 to 5 in the afternoon over the two days.

Rev Harold A McCurdy, former Grace M E pastor Warren, Pa, is assigned to Epworth M E New Castle replacing Rev John A Galbraith who moves to Kane Pa. Galbraith came to Epworth from Ridgeway four years ago. Local changes announced by Bishop Adna Wright Leonard in Erie Conference. McCurdy native of Mercer county, Allegheny College graduate, married with three daughters. He served Cochranton Bethel Oil City New Bethlehem Grace Warren prior to the move.

Magnus Johnson a Swedish immigrant ex sailor and lumberjack and lifelong farmer from Kingston near Kimball Minnesota dies after pneumonia. He was stricken August 23 and died yesterday in a Litchfield hospital at age 64 heading to funeral services at his Kingston farm Wednesday. Johnson was a blunt champion of farmers and laborers throughout his political career.
