Fire swept half the Million Dollar Pier in Atlantic City early today, damaging the half mile amusement center estimated at over 200 000 dollars. Firefighters confined the blaze to the pier from the boardwalk to the waterline as Walter Merchant and a pier worker were rescued from their apartment. The showplace, built in 1906 and leased to George Costello, housed theatres, a ballroom, concessions and sideshows.
Four striking Brother hoods were due to meet Missouri Pacific officials in St Louis to end the 11 state line walkout. Union leaders rejected a bankruptcy trustee Guy A Thompson proposal to settle 282 issues and resume work but agreed to renew talks today. About 27000 employees have been idled on 7200 miles of track.
