European protest bans suspend flights to the Soviet Union

European pilots from Britain France Italy Spain Sweden Norway Finland and the Netherlands began a 60 day halt on flights to the Soviet Union in response to the KAL jetliner destruction. Secret Soviet missile tests near flight 007 site

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that a secret Soviet advanced missile system, capable of countering U S nuclear missiles, has been tested near the area below where Korean Air Lines Flight 007 was shot down. Current and former U S intelligence officials cited.

Soviets to Expel U S Consul Over Espionage Charge

The Soviet Union says an American vice consul Lon David Augustenborg and his wife Denise were caught spying near Leningrad. Tass says Augustenborg was persona non grata for illegal espionage acts and the expulsion follows similar actions against three other U S embassy staff in six months.

Milk production tax ruled legal by federal appeals court

A 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel ruled the federal government may levy a 50-cent tax per hundred pounds of milk produced to reduce dairy output and offset part of a 2.3 billion dollar price support program. Workmen's claims drop in New Castle in first half 1983

The citys workmen compensation claims show a 30 percent drop from the prior year with 23 claims totaling 10 795 39 paid in the first six months of 1983 compared to 33 and 31 735 52 in 1982. Police and firemen accounted for 72 lost days and the overall days lost per employee stood at 1 3 in 1983 versus 6 2 in 1982.

Navy veteran shoots into reunion killing two in backyard in Pittsburgh area

David Zewe Jr. 31 of Natrona Heights was charged with two counts of criminal homicide after firing 18 rounds from an automatic rifle into a Posati family backyard reunion near Pittsburgh. Neighbors said Zewe, treated for mental illness at a veterans hospital, appeared calm and not violent before the attack. Three others were wounded as police recovered two automatic rifles and a pistol. Zewe, discharged from the Navy in 1981, had spent three weeks in a veterans’ psychiatric facility earlier this year.
