Fortas nomination to be chief justice eyed for week of Sept

Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield said Abe Fortas will likely face a full Senate vote the week of September 23. The Judiciary Committee awaited Fortas's reply on returning for more questioning about his ties to Lyndon B. Johnson and his views on obscenity.

North American Rockwell plant resumes after 11 day strike

The Transmission and Axle Division returns to full operation after an 11 day strike. Local 4194 and the United Steelworkers of America and the company accepted a court order issued by Judge Howard W. Lyon following a two day hearing. The company filed a petition.

Order ends injunction as plant workers return to 7 am shift

An injunction against the union ends the picketing at the plant with about 550 workers to return to the 7 am shift. Pickets were removed by 5 pm yesterday and workers returned today without incident. The strike termination does not affect the union's bid for decertification from USW. The local seeks to leave USW to bargain independently.

Rockwell Strike With USW Leads to Local Administratorship

Local 4194 struck Rockwell over unequal benefits as five plants bargain. A contract with a 90 percent three year package was rejected as the local sought to leave USW. A National Labor Relations Board ruling on decertification is pending after a two month hearing. President Theodore Bohizic and others were suspended. administrator John B Minnocci oversees the local.

US urged to admit spying on North Korea by Pueblo crew

Commander Lloyd Bucher told a North Korea press conference that the Pueblo was on a spying mission in North Korean waters when seized on January 23. The North Korean agency urged U.S. apology as a first step for crew repatriation, noting eight months of detention.

Gunman fires rifle at police cruiser in Crown Heights

A hidden gunman on a rooftop fired two or three rifle shots into a patrol car on Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights Brooklyn. Sgt. Peter Kunik and patrolman James Rigney were treated for cuts and released. The incident follows August shotgun ambushes and recent clashes between police and Black Panthers at a Panther storefront.

Gun control bill seen passing in four or five days

Senate Democratic leader Mike Mansfield predicted early next week that a gun control bill would pass in some shape or form. The measure would extend federal limits on pistol sales to rifles and shotguns and bar interstate mail order and certain sales to the impaired. House action had already approved a weaker version.

Father gives up after manhunt

Lee Bresee of South Creek hid in woods with four children for six days to escape a minor traffic crash. He surrendered at his sister’s home near the state line. The family was treated for exposure at Sayre hospital while police investigated abandonment charges against Bresee’s wife.

Lawrence County Building Activity Exceeds 5.8 Million

A state report shows Lawrence County spent 5.87 million on 636 general construction projects in the past year across 18 municipalities. Residential work accounted for 2.86 million with 177 projects and 184 new families, while nonresidential activity reached 2.46 million across 240 projects.
