Incendiary bombs set fires around Berlin hitting the Reichstag and government district while the U S embassy garden was damaged. Evacuations occurred as hundreds of houses were endangered by the raid, five killed and several injured in the strongest bombing yet.
Friday marks a superstition laden date as residents observe September 13. At 805 Oak Street Mrs. Edgar Smith hosted a viewing of a night blooming cereus while downtown a truck bumped into an auto but freed itself after disconnecting bumpers. Little Jimmy Dufford brags a rare one legged grasshopper found in his yard. A large flock of white ducks, over fifty, was seen swimming in the Nesham?ock area.

Speaker William B Bankhead collapsed from sciatic pain in a Baltimore hotel. Dr George W Calver said he is sick but not in immediate danger. Tallulah Bankhead rushed from New York to be with her father as concerns over his heart condition and recent health history linger.

President Roosevelt returns to Washington with a speech described as the labor speech of the campaign aimed at pressing the 1940 race against Wendell Willkie. Centre County District Attorney planned further surprises as the trial of Richard Millinder, charged with the brutal slaying of his 24 year old neighbor Faye Gates, entered its third day. A prosecution witness testified Millinder told his wife Evelyn I did it while defense attorney Harvey warned him not to speak further. Mrs Miller, wife of the Centre County sheriff, testified to the exchange and Mrs Millinder cried out in the county prison. Sheriff Miller was later called as a witness. The proceeding continued despite defense protests.
Pittsburgh records an official low of 43 amid ongoing cold snap with W S Brotzman noting 41 in outskirts and no frost. Forecaster warns of colder temperatures tonight and suggests a rebound by Friday.
London broadcast by Prime Minister Winston Churchill warned Germany may invade the British Isles within the next week. He urged Britons to stand firm, saying preparations for invasion are advancing and Britain is prepared to fight in every village and street. He noted Germany’s daylight air mastery attempt had failed conspicuously.
Brownmiller former Pennsylvania secretary of highways must serve one year in jail and pay a 3090 dollar fine. The state supreme court denied his appeal from convictions in Luzerne county payroll padding cases. The decision was reached in Harrisburg and sent to the prothonotary in Philadelphia.
