Pope John Paul II touched down in Miami for the start of a nine city U S visit, greeting President Reagan and Mrs Reagan at the airport as temperatures climbed into the 90s. The schedule included a private Vizcaya meeting, a Biscayne Boulevard motorcade, and talks with 750 priests at St Martha's Church following a welcome at St Mary's Cathedral.

The livers were successfully implanted into patients, with dog tests showing up to 30 hours. Parents charged in death of 4 year old Kayla Ann
The parents William Nice and Marcella Nice of 1117 W State St were arrested on involuntary manslaughter and two counts each of recklessly endangering and endangering the welfare of children after Kayla Ann Nice died of smoke inhalation in a bedroom fire. Her brother Shawn, 2, survived and both children were left unattended. Fire officials ruled the fire accidental and linked it to the girl playing with matches. The couple posted $25,000 bond each and await a preliminary hearing scheduled for Oct. 2.
