Tenure workers at North American Rockwell Transmission and Axle Division agreed via their attorney to stop picketing the Hobart Street plant after a Pittsburgh court hearing on contempt charges against 11 strikers. A continuation hearing on the temporary restraining order was set.
The W T Grant Co plans a large store at North City Plaza in Neshannock Township with 54 400 square feet units forming four complete shops under one roof. A Bradford House restaurant for 79 seats and a four bay auto center will accompany the family fashion housewares small wares and hardware offerings. John F Crowley says the new store honors customers with value and service. The plaza also will include a supermarket drug store bank and other stores. (Continued on page 21.)
Federal judge issues injunction at Attica state prison barring administrative reprisals against rioting inmates as hostages dwindle to about 30 in two cellblocks. The order aims to halt the insurrection that began Thursday, while 500 inmates remain involved and 11 guards injured.
City police and firemen submitted their contract demands to the City Council via letters from attorney Alfred V. Papa. Police seek a $2,000 across the board raise, extra Columbus Day pay, seniority protections, higher clothing allowance, overtime pay guarantees, extended vacation time, sick leave, major medical coverage, severance, and cost of living adjustments. Firemen mirror many items and add ten paid holidays, a seniority bid system, and retroactive clothing increases.
Residents from Ridgewood Court jeered township officials over open ditches and clogged pipes with a staged rat in a bottle depicting sewage. Supervisor Robert R. Smith urged calm as voices rose, with disputes over whether to fund more work and how soon repairs can be made, possibly a year and a half.
