German air raid on London disrupts transport and offices as three maternity hospitals are struck and fires set near St Pauls Cathedral. About 140 German planes took part. casualties tallied as authorities assess damage while Churchill visits.
A park watchman on Gaston Park heard a quacking noise and found a duck tied to a sleeping man’s foot, trying to rouse its owner. Nearby, Mrs. James Fox’s corcus plant drew spectators as a dog ran loose on North Intercer Street, only to be led back by a janitor as the master’s whistle returned.
The 24 hour period ending 4 p.m. Monday recorded a maximum 77 and minimum 58 with trace precipitation and a river stage of 46 feet. A year earlier the maximum 85 and minimum 59 with no precipitation.

BELLEFONTE Pa Sept 10 A jury of nine men and three women ready to hear testimony in the murder trial of Richard Millinder aged 22 a W P A worker. The state demands the electric chair and 32 witnesses are named to testify through Friday. The defendant pleads not guilty.
Wendell Willkie, Republican nominee, urged immediate selective service operation and urged elimination of the Fish amendment delaying the Military Service Bill by 60 days to boost voluntary enlistment. He praised Maine election results, congratulated Governor Sewall and Senator Brewster, and outlined a 7000 mile western campaign trip with 69 speeches, starting with a Coffeyville speech on September 16 addressing foreign and domestic issues.
British ships totaling 56 020 tons were lost in the week ending Sept 1, with five allied vessels at 15 098 tons and four neutral ships at 12 517 tons also reported as lost. The first year totals stand at 1 539 196 tons for British ships, 462 924 tons for allied ships, and 769 213 tons for neutral ships.
Pittsburgh Sept 10 The Sun Telegraph reports Governor Arthur H James ordered a stop work on draft board preparations across the state after a dispute with the military affairs department. Prospective local draft board member listings and related forms and cards remain halted with no resumption order issued.
Beaver County indicts four men from Ambridge and Aliquippa on conspiracy and state election law violations linked to Communist election petitions circulated last spring. Charges include 32 counts of conspiracy and election law violations plus perjury against March. Reed remains at large. the other three are free on bond. Trial tentatively set for next week.
Hyde Park, Sept 10. President Roosevelt in his Hyde Park study outlined a speech draft for tomorrow night that is expected to provoke controversy between Democrats and Republicans. Radio networks nervous about the balance of no active campaigning against Wendell Willkie versus GOP opposition to the allotment.
London reports Royal Air Force bombers attacked targets in Berlin during the night. The operations continued despite adverse weather conditions, with authorities in London stating the raids reached intended objectives.

SHARON Pa Sept 10 one six-year-old Virginian Kenden died last night at Buhl hospital and two others Eleanor Ludi and Dorothy Hulz both six suffered skull fractures but expected to live after three Wheatland first graders walked into a locomotive tender on the Erie railroad at a crossing witnesses said the children had just left class and were on their way home adults described the scene as a tragic accident with the train arriving at the crossing together with the students.
Rev. A. M. Stump was elected president of the New Castle Ministerial Association at the fall gathering held at the First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Thomas B. Shearer presided, with Rev. Norman S. Spear leading devotions. Committee reports covered library radio education and park, and nominations named J. C. Rose vice president and R. B. Withers secretary treasurer.

Isaac Firrris, 84, longtime Pittsburgh retailer and former president of Harris Stores, died today at his Squirrel Hill home. He had planned to celebrate their fifty fifth wedding anniversary with wife Rachel Smit Warris on September 22. Harris began in Pittsburgh in 1889.

In Flint mid September a factory dispute halted production at Fisher Body Plant and Buick Motor Division. Eighteen thousand five hundred workers were idled, four fire at Fisher and Buick combined. A break between AF of L and CIO unions led to another shutdown, with the plant to stay closed until the dispute is settled.
