H L Cleland becomes mathematics instructor also coaching athletic teams at 10 dollars monthly. Bertha Sterns named secretary to the principal at 10 dollars plus regular salary. Lucille VanGorder heads English department. Kimes to hire two more commercial instructors. H A Packard hired as bookkeeping instructor at 80 dollars. Miss Mossman and Miss Foulke to receive current salaries until successors assumed. Claire Croestock chosen playground instructor at 75 dollars.
On Sunday September 14 a nationwide service for free schools will be held in city and county churches. Clergymen including J Elmer Campbell and W O Ferguson will lead prayers in multiple tongues and preach on religious and moral education. The event, organized by the National Reform Association from Pittsburgh, echoes decisions from the 1913 World Christian Citizenship conference in Portland.
Scarcely an hour after the death of Michael Bushack seven months old son of Mr and Mrs John Bushack of West Pittsburg another family member a young girl arrived from the homeland. The deceased had been ill with cholera infantum. Funeral services will be at St Josephs church with interment in St Josephs cemetery. A local health remark suggests life would be prolonged if people stopped by the hips instead of bending the backbone.
Michael P. King, a telegraph operator in Coaticook Quebec, witnessed Harry K Thaw being seized from the immigration detention room and hauled into an automobile by two men. He said Thaw cried out for help as he was pushed and driven away, protesting he was kidnapped.
George Roys of Big Beaver John M. English of Union C W Knox of Pulaski C B Cameron of Mahoning Joseph Reed of North Beaver named as jurymen to date in county court proceedings.
Five jurors had been chosen with Norman Vandivort on trial for the murder of Walter Linnenbrink. A panel of 100 talesmen was summoned by Sheriff Whaley and Deputy Carl Johnson. Jurors reported for duty and will be paid $2.50 daily plus mileage as courtroom selection continues.
Samuel Altman of Richmond Indiana believes the Hudson River torso is his wife. He plans to go to New York to confirm by a distinctive L tattoo on the shoulder and a scar from a prior abdominal operation.
Paris Sept 10 Fears rise that France will skip the Rheims International Aviation Trophy event starting Sept 29. Only a few countries may attend and the U S may not be represented. Glynn H. Curtiss arrives from London and plans a challenge to Tom Sopwith with his Flying Boat hydro-aeroplane.
The school board last evening decided non residents must pay full local high school tuition. Townships must contract by October 1 to cover the city cost per pupil, which exceeded $6.25 monthly last year. The board aims to have townships cover the complete per pupil expense. Final payment of $1 018.06 was made to McGinness Smith for heating system repairs at the eighth grade building after a year of hold. The boiler issue halted previous payment. the heating firm disputed fault but accepted the balance.
Wm Travers Jerome abandons return to Montreal and asks New York AG Carmody to urge New Hampshire and Maine governors to arrest Harry Thaw as a fugitive. He calls the pursuit bug hunting and heads toward Bennington Vermont then North Adams to await news of Thaw's whereabouts.
A runaway accident on Young Street this morning injures Driver Mitchell of Lawrence Laundry though not seriously. His horse bolted, tearing across the David Elliott lawn before stopping. Mitchell escaped with minor injuries as onlookers watched the frantic chase end in a halt to the horse’s flight.
Two dynamite explosions wrecked the private bank of A. Conforti on the West Side. Twenty residents in adjacent buildings were hurled about as the three story building caught fire. Initial reports spoke of deaths but searches found none. About $10,000 in cash was in the bank, with theft uncertain until wreckage is cleared.
George Knox of Lincoln Avenue lost a gray felt hat and placed an advertisement in The News. L. L. Schenfnecker of Harbor Street found the hat, saw the ad, and returned it to the owner.
A Portsmouth dispatch reports British Admiralty awarding contracts to Signor Ulivi, an Italian inventor, who claims violet rays can unleash a new warfare agency capable of blowing up great dreadnoughts at sea. Details of the explosive remain undisclosed.

The Erie conference opened its first regular session at the First Methodist church with memorial service for eight deceased pastors. Bishop C. W. Smith was elected president, W. P. Graham secretary, and numerous officers named for administration and statistics. Several names from other conferences sought enrollment in the Erie delegation.
The Grand Army of the Republic hosts a reception Thursday at 7:30 PM in their hall for comrades visiting Erie for the Methodist church conference. Old Veterans of the Erie Conference meet at the church parlors with Sons of Veterans. A campfire, speeches, songs, and war stories follow, with lunch served by Ladies of the G A R. Dr. J N Fradenburgh and Dr. M Stone lead the conference organizers.
