Detroit Fire Department receives uncommon support from suburban districts to battle a series of fires. Officials say interjurisdictional aid boosted response times and helped contain blazes across multiple neighborhoods.
Norma Smith, longtime Division of Vital Records employee, discovered smoke in a spare bedroom at her single story brick and frame ranch home at 802 E Hillcrest Ave just before heading to work. Neighbors comforted her as she stood in the driveway with the house phone after the blaze began. Her husband of 38 years, Jack Smith, had recently died, leaving her to cope with the loss while assessing the fire scene.
A dawn house fire on East Hillcrest Avenue interrupted Norma Smith’s morning routine. Firefighters arrived by 7 a.m. and contained the blaze, sparing Smith’s home and her black lab Max. Neighbors reported hearing sirens and smoke, while crews checked bedroom wiring and coordinated with Neshannock Township, New Wilmington, Mahoning Township, New Castle police, and Medevac.

Lawrence County adds a two mile mountain bike loop at West Park Nature Center in Union Township. The Park Harbor Trail, built by volunteers and Lawrence County Conservation District staff, runs through a 108 acre site off Old Youngstown Road and features two levels of difficulty marked by blue squares and green circles. A dedication is set for 9 am with a Trek the Trail event from 9:30 to noon.
The Lawrence County Marching Band Festival returns at 7 p.m. on September 15 at New Castle High School Taggart Stadium with four new instructors at Shenago Union New Castle and Neshannock. Westminster College's Marching Titans perform along with high school bands and auxiliary groups. Tickets are 3 at the gate or 2.50 in advance. rain date is September 22.
