London faced the ruins after a night of heavy bombing by German air fleets. An official tally cited about 600 dead and 2,500 wounded in the last 43 hours as theatres, night clubs and business districts suffered devastating damage.
Neshannock avenue from North sleet to Rural avenue has been reopened to traffic after resurfacing work. A downtown incident saw a lady shopper drenched by water sliding off a wet canvas truck top as she crossed East Washington street. Heavy rain hit Lawrence county Sunday with high streams, and New Castle Methodists host an Erie conference delegation at the First Methodist church. Mrs. James Logue displayed a blooming cereas on West Washington street. West Side neighbors tidy an alley between Boro Line and Etna streets.
United States weather statistics show a 24 hour period ending 5 p.m. Sunday with a maximum of 80 degrees and a minimum of 62, precipitation 0.35 inches, and a river stage of 46 feet. A prior 24 hour period ending 5 p.m. Saturday recorded a high of 78, low of 46, trace precipitation.
London witnesses report a night of terror as Nazi bombs struck haphazardly across the city. Schools hospitals churches theaters and homes suffered extensive destruction with delayed-action explosions still firing into morning. Fire brigades rush through streets as residents survey the widespread devastation.

A large turnout attended the 4 H Girls Club Round-up at Union Township High School on Saturday. The morning featured exhibit setup and judging by Miss Doss Laughlin of Beaver County for dresses and Miss Elsie Trabers of Penn State for other garments. Afternoon included a style revue led by the King and Queen of Posture and their court, with awards to be announced soon by Miss Julia Markle of Lawrence County.
President Roosevelt signed the national defense bill costing 5.246 billion dollars to form an army of 1,200,000 and a stronger ocean navy. It raises total defense allocations for the current congress to over 11 billion and authorizes 18,000 plates for air forces.
New Wilmington reports a lightning strike hit an East Neshannon home during a Sunday storm. Firefighters led by Chief Harold Anderson quickly put out the blaze, with most losses from a $100 damage bill and water use. The home, owned by Robert Hamilton, had two remodeled apartments opened only a month earlier. newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Howard Rogers occupied one unit, furniture spared, while the other apartment was vacant.

Three Evans City men were burned while clearing a pipeline on a National Transit Company line near Callery. The Bessemer Rotary Club will honor the reopening of the Jackson road bridge along with a straightened road layout. Highway officials will attend a Wednesday dinner and then join Burgess Carl Montgomery and others for remarks at the bridge after its summer closure.
Death record lists Mrs. Annie Clea age 67 of New Wilmington. Also noted are James Powell age 8 of Sharon and an infant Phillips with a 23 dollar amount in Warren aye Jue.

Cairo Sept Company of thousands of British troops arrived in Egypt marking a major convoy since hostilities began. The force includes men from England Rhodesia Malta and Australia among aviators technicians hospital corps members and tank drivers. They entered through an unrevealed Egyptian port and were escorted by British planes without sighting any Italian warships.
New York dispatch reports Mary Martine, 24, a waitress, found nude and strangled in a fourth floor room near Times Square. Rooming house proprietor Andrew Vasile discovered the body while collecting past due rent. a gag and cloth bound her head.
King George the Sixth toured the damaged areas of London and its outskirts, consoling survivors as air raid workers fought fires and searched for bodies. He spoke with bereaved families, viewed a 75 by 50 foot crater, and received a tumultuous reception in the worst hit east end district.
City of New Castle council unanimously adopts a resolution by Director of property Joseph D B Alexander turning over supervision of the New Castle airport Route 422 to William H Teevind Finding Wilson. Alexander also authorizes state revenue department approval to license and operate the airport for municipal and commercial purposes with Wilson and Ice rights to use it for commercial needs. They must pay premiums on liability insurance and keep inbound outbound flight records and can call municipal police as needed.
Vichy France announced it will not recognize diplomatic representatives from countries occupied by Nazi Germany following Berlin’s demarche. Envoys from Poland Belgium Holland Norway and Luxembourg were deprived of diplomatic status.
Approximately 300 representatives of foreign governments must place on their automobiles plates for the state of California bearing the words Foreign Gain instead of U S tags. Marvis Hynes of Los Angeles shows both types of plates.
Richard Millinder a 22 year old road worker went on trial in Centre county court charged with killing Faye Gates on an early morning May 5 on a lonely mountain road. Gates body was found beaten and dumped beside her car in Spook Hollow. The case proceeds as details continue on page two.
London the International News Service reports that Mervill Mueller of its London staff, resting briefly in the office, narrowly escaped as his apartment was wrecked by bombs. A delayed action bomb exploded in front of the apartment house, and moments later a high explosive bomb struck nearby, blasting debris in all directions.
The London area faced renewed German bombardment as air raid sirens triggered mass sheltering for a third night. Heavy bombs struck central districts, with anti aircraft fire and fighter defenses engaging in the skies above the capital.
Rep Vinson Di Ga, chair of the House Naval Affairs Committee, said the Navy Department will announce awards for about 200 warships under the four billion dollar two ocean navy bill. The awards will be the largest contract setting in history and will push the Navy toward a 70 percent rise in fighting strength to deter potential attacks in the Atlantic and Pacific by hostile powers.
