Dr. Carl Austin Weiss a well educated Baton Rouge physician who tried to kill Senator Huey P. Long last night. An honor Tulane graduate who studied in Vienna and Paris he was 30 and had a three month old baby. He was son in law of Judge B P Pavy of Opelousas who faced Longs gerrymandering bill.
Rain fell steadily this morning as about twelve thousand city children began the school term with many making their first trip to school. New Castle and Lawrence county’s college students are back on campus this week and others will return in the following days.

The event supported the party ticket for November and urged repeal of the manufacturers exemption tax and passage of pending bills. Carmi Preston led as picnic chairman introducing Clarence A Patterson. Justice Barnes spoke first praising repeal and criticizing Republican Senate inaction.
Florida today bade farewell to 327 men who died in the hurricane that struck the Florida Keys last week. Twenty thousand Miami area residents attended mass funeral services at Bay Front Park. Gov. Sholtz Colonel Ijams and other dignitaries, plus a Roosevelt telegram, attended the services.
Mary E. Clarke aged 93 of West Washington street was admitted to Jameson Memorial hospital Saturday at 2 25 PM with a compound fracture of the left arm after a fall at her home. She was alone and cannot recall exactly how the accident occurred. The old homestead on the Diamond, birthplace, remains on site despite government acquisition for the post office.
State Grange Master J Audley Boak repudiates Emma Miller’s claim that the Grange’s statements on the constitutional revision were funded by Joe Grundy and Andy Mellon. He asserts the Grange is non political and funded by farmers’ labor, meeting with bold denials.
Two Niles Michigan railroad detectives Walter Butt and Arthur Wendle were killed early today in South Bend by Clarence Pierce a pool room owner. Pierce was slightly wounded in a brief gunfight and police delayed arrests after investigating the double slaying.

Spontaneous combustion believed to have caused a Sunday night blaze that destroyed a 15 year old barn on the Sherman Rodgers farm two miles west of Plaingrove. Hay and straw burned, cattle and machinery were saved, and Thomas Rodgers, 23, fractured an arm after falling from the burning loft. Neighbors helped battle the flames and recover some contents as the glow lit the area. Insurance was suspected to cover part of the loss.
Gen Louis Guerre ordered no photography inside the Louisiana Capitol Baton Rouge using force if needed. Plainclothes police surrounded halls with shotguns and pistols as crowds moved through the corridor where Huey Long was shot, the scene quickly cleared of traces of the fracas.

R L Garvin of the second ward was named foreman by Judge R L Hildebrand as the grand jury convened at the courthouse this morning. About forty five cases on the list will be presented by District Attorney Mont L Riley. none are very serious. Two jurors were excused and several others did not answer when called. Judge Hildebrand delivered a charge outlining jurors duties.
New York dispatch reports Daniel Ciccone a 29 year old taxi driver was killed and two men Al Fred Ridings 34 and Benjamin Cohen 36 both of Manhattan were wounded in a gamblers war. Cohen listed in critical condition. killers fled.
Safety Director D. O. Davies said no recommendation would be made for weeks after Fire Chief H. Clare Stockman resigned effective October 1. The council met today in City Hall to discuss the matter and Davies spoke with a News reporter.
Robert Ambrose 55 aka Robert Long was killed in Baltimore & Ohio yard when struck by shifting empty cars. Coroner says likely self homicide. Body found by Lou Davis as crew moved cars. Police and undertaker notified for identification and removal.
