Italy set to formally join the anti Bolshevik pact with Germany and Japan, aligning against Soviet Russia. Rome receives a new Soviet note demanding reparations for torpedoed Russian ships and punishment of those responsible.
Shanghai reports say China plans suitable action against the Japanese blockade and asks friendly powers to keep ships at a safe distance from Chinese guns. Chinese air force will counter the blockade and ships should display national colors. A Japanese air attack on refugee trains near Sungkiang killed and injured hundreds as new duels erupt near Shanghai.
New Castle public schools report 10 294 pupils on opening day led by Dr C C Green with a 217 pupil drop from 1936. Elementary grades fall while high schools gain 4800 junior and senior students. Washington up slightly and Franklin down slightly. Enrollment expected to rise daily through the first month.
Anxious crowds gather as British ministers meet to assess dual European and Far East crises. The Soviet embassy accuses Italy of sinking Russian freighters, Italy weighs joining the German Japanese pact, and Japanese air raids kill hundreds of Chinese refugees while a submarine incident disrupts British shipping near the Dodecanese.

The ship en route to Alexandria from Batum was inspected then allowed to proceed unscathed. Turkish fleet was ordered to pursue the sub. Lloyds reports also note an unidentified battleship torpedoing the 3000 ton tanker Harpa, which escaped damage after leaving Tunis Port Said.
President Roosevelt plans a cross country swing to the Pacific coast to gauge public sentiment on crop control and hour wage legislation. A Western trip to Seattle to visit family and site visits to Fort Peck Bonneville and Grand Coulee projects are expected as part of the tour. He may call a special session if national mood supports it.
In Nuremberg Chancellor Hitler publicly lauds the labor army as a permanent weapon of peace. About 38 000 workers with shovels march past as 2 000 Zeppelin field workers parade shirtless. Guests include Nicholas Franco, brother of Franco of Spain, awaiting Hitler.
In New Haven Indiana on September 8 a Wabash passenger train derailed on a curve after being scalded by escaping steam. The engineer died and 17 others were injured, five seriously, while over 200 passengers escaped unhurt.
United States naval authorities announced that four transports will be placed at the disposal of Americans wishing to be evacuated from China. The report from Shanghai is dated September 8.
The last rural schools in Lawrence County opened the new term with good prospects for banner enrollment. Some began August 30. most started yesterday, with the final sessions today as County Superintendent John C. Syling and new assistant Roy F. Conway plan a busy round of visits to ensure a strong start.

The historical pageant enjoyed a second performance during Labor week at Taggart Field with strong audience approval. The show featured a music and pioneer scenes segment followed by the Melting Pot drills with groups from many nations. The Rosena grounds hosted the exposition as the pageant was scheduled again for 8 pm tonight and Thursday.

Police search underway for thieves who ransacked the three story Georgetown home of James Roosevelt secretary to the president. Losses uncertain until a full check of the shambles is completed. Roosevelt is in Hyde Park New York handling his duties.
East Side Townsend club will meet at 8 p.m. on Thursday in the former Third U P church at Beckford and East Washington street. Rev Samuel R Maitland will speak. The amateur contest committee will also convene.
Mrs. L. C. Mantz aged unknown is noted at 1116 East Washington Street. Mrs. Ella Elizabeth Douds, 79, of Aliquippa, is also listed. Mrs. Clara Pipper of 10 West Reynolds Street and Thomas A. Brenneman, 59, of Volant, R. D. L. are recorded in the death notices.
Reports from Valencia relay a loyalist victory on the Aragon front near Cuera with heavy losses to insurgents, about 500 killed or wounded. In Madrid an insurgent break through attempt was repulsed as government troops held positions. London reports Spanish warship Canarias badly damaged off the Algerian coast after a clash with six destroyers.
County officials Bolinger and Hannon met Hillsville officials and limestone companies Carbon Pittsburg and Union to discuss funding for the proposed Edenburg Hillsville road. They oppose paying for an $18000 overhead bridge and two underpasses and will seek land donations and company positions before possible talks with the state highway department. In Indianapolis a Big Four engineer Conrad Flackender 50 of Bellefontaine Ohio was killed after stepping into a train yard.
Eckies and Carruthers began remodeling the Citizens National Bank at Washington and Mill. The 90 day project will sheath the exterior in granite and marble giving a modern look while removing the third floor and later expanding banking quarters. A wooden shell on Mill street protects pedestrians during construction.
