Panella Wins Orange Crate Derby For Second Time
Charles Panella son of Mr and Mrs John A Panella 202 Edison avenue won the fifth annual Optimist Orange Crate Derby Monday morning on Taylor street hill defeating John Bockius R D 1 in the final heat. It was his second straight derby title as a crowd of several thousand watched the home made cars in action with spins and near misses but no serious injuries. Car No 16 driven by George Giacumakis 1311 Cunningham avenue spun near the line and landed on the curb past the finish. The closest race of the day was between Eddie Kay 301 Hillcrest av. Woman Killed in Head-On Collision on Perry Highway
Miss Ruth Thomas of 1605 East Street Pittsburgh died in a head-on crash on the Perry highway three miles south of Portersville around 9 a.m. Sunday. Paul Coco, 28, of East End Pittsburgh, and Richard Lendhurst, 23, of Cleveland, each drove cars in the crash. Coco’s passenger was killed. Lendhurst car occupants including Richard 23, William 51, and Frank 4 Lendhurst were hospitalized in Ellwood City with serious injuries. Coco and other Lendhurst occupants were said to be badly hurt. Hospital reports list injuries without specifics.
