Benny Howard, Chicago sportsman and tiler, and his wife Maxine were badly hurt when their plane crashed 37 miles northeast of Crown Point New Mexico during a transcontinental air race. Howard regained consciousness after more than 12 hours. he has two broken legs a broken left arm a brain concussion and internal injuries. His wife has two broken legs and internal injuries.
Joseph Paglia of Canyon street sustained arm lacerations and a damaged air bag after a Harmony Short Line bus and a car collided at 11 am on the north side of Pit Square and West Washington Street. The driver and bus operator, W M Moore of Butler, both claimed the light was green. Policeman Ray Richards investigated.
Minneapolis and Hennepin county face a major strike with over 15,000 workers idled. The stoppage halts the milling industry as Washburn Crosby and other mills shut down after picket line action. WPA holiday layoffs affect food and grain deliveries while drivers unions strike for recognition and a 30 hour week.
Miss E Irene Maple aged 45 of Fountain Inn died at Jameson Memorial hospital Friday night from injuries after being struck by an automobile driven by William Yingling of Rock Island Illinois on State Route 108 near Slippery Rock. Coroner Orville Potter notes Miss Maple and her father William G Maple paused to cross the road when a following car struck her skull and caused multiple injuries. Yingling was arrested by state highway patrol at Butler on charges of assault and battery with an automobile. bail set at 1000 dollars. The case awaits further proceedings.

Governor Alfred M. Landon returned to the Kansas state house desk after touring drought areas in northeastern Kansas He said fresh rains have broken the drought in most parts of Kansas and urged officials to help farmers replenish cattle feed supplies The drought had reduced local feed to about twenty percent of normal forcing farmers to buy or sell livestock The trip included stops in St Joseph Missouri and Atchison Kansas with rain meeting him at Meriden Kansas
President Roosevelt, returning to Washington for Labor Day, will soon begin another flying tour into the Tennessee Valley Authority region and Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Though billed as non political, the trip will end in Charlotte, North Carolina with a home coming rally. The itinerary has him leaving Washington Tuesday night for Knoxville.

The body of Philip Chambers, son of Judge James A Chambers of this city, was found in Lake Chautauqua after he drowned last Monday afternoon. Attendants Gardner and Foster recovered the body near Pont Chautauqua with coroner notified. Funeral services set for Monday afternoon at the residence with Dr Irvine of the First United Presbyterian Church officiating.
A woman registered as Henrietta Abrenc of Turtlepoint PA plunged to her death from a room at the Hotel New Yorker in New York. Police said she also left a Park Avenue address for messages to be sent to 1185 Park Avenue care of Robert McCormack, who could not be located.
New Castle and Lawrence county prepare a Labor Day celebration at Cascade Park featuring an afternoon of races and contests for children and adults, a speaking program in the evening, and a gigantic fireworks display to close the event. A softball game between local teams is noted to follow the sports program.
Harry Richman and Dick Merrill, pilots of the “Broadway to Pleasure” flight, decided to attempt a London to New York one hop return. After inspecting the machine, Richman said they would await the American weather report and, if favorable, plan a dawn takeoff for New York. They expect to carry 650 gallons of fuel on this leg, a heavier load than the previous flight, due to head winds.
Harrisburg Sept 5 The Pennsylvania Power Company and the Public Service Commission announced a new electric rate schedule expected to reduce charges for many consumers. The revision affects commercial and small power services in the region including the Susquehanna district. The plan, pending final approval, aims to adjust rates with a year four year terms and to balance costs across classes of customers.
President Roosevelt told about 15 000 people in Indianapolis today he plans to travel from Washington through the west to urge federal and state cooperation in solving economic problems. He rode two hours with crowds along his route inspecting WPA projects and ended at the state fairgrounds where thousands awaited him.
