Registration of voters starts tomorrow in New Castle with old registrations void. Voters must appear in person at their precincts for the fall registration. Registrars carry checks and supplies and will collect details including name, residence, occupation, length of residence, and prior registration information.
A Derby racing plane made an emergency landing near Chewton at about 11:00 AM while the coast to coast air derby from New York to Los Angeles was in progress. The pilot circled low over Wampum district for a landing place but the rough terrain along the Ellwood City–Wampum highway area forced a field landing on Chewton hill. One tire was damaged due to the rough field, and a crowd gathered as villagers offered assistance before the story continued on Page Fourteen.
Four nattily dressed bandits robbed the Mt Airy Building and Loan Association directors of about 2000 dollars last night. The men crept up to the second floor meeting room and fired at occupants while the loot was taken. A two mile chase through Germantown followed but the quartet escaped.
State Chairman John R. Collins asked for the resignation of Clarence A. Patterson as Lawrence County Democratic Committee chair, appointing William J. Broe Jr. in his place. Patterson was not present for his election, and Porter says he may state his position soon.
City schools opened for the term with Dr. C C Green estimating the first day enrollment as the highest in city history. The George Washington junior high school was the only new campus, using the gym for assembly as the auditorium and cafeteria remained unfinished.

Senator Charles Curtis, Republican vice presidential nominee, told a Boston outdoor rally that Democrats would slash tariffs and ruin American prosperity. He warned New England industry that Smith’s stance on the Underwood tariff would abandon protections for labor, industry, and agriculture. Curtis urged retaining tariffs to protect American workers and warned of 1914 era unemployment if protections were removed.
New Castle unveils the PC Service Building on Public Square as a modern, fireproof center for county citizens. From 2 to 5 PM and 7 to 10 PM today the public is invited to inspect brick, stone, and steel construction showcasing lighting and artistry. The structure serves multiple county and public needs and is described as one of the United States’ most complete buildings of its kind.
Cortel Glass, a 27 year old New Castle postal employee, prepared for the 15 mile international free for all swim from Toronto across Lake Ontario with 256 competitors. He left for Toronto after warming up in the waters and is determined to participate despite cold weather and icy waters, noting he expects to finish using ice skates if needed. Mrs Louise E Foulke age 80 of 218 Boyles avenue widow of C W Foulke and a prominent Methodist church worker in the city died early today at Shenango Valley hospital after weeks of illness. Her death followed complications from a July fall that fractured her hip at home. She was born April 25 1840 in Harmonsburg Crawford County daughter of Daniel Luper and Katherine Roudebush Luper.
Ross of Chicago led the first two and a half miles of the 15 mile Wrigley marathon swim in Toronto as George Young, Catalina winner, trailed in second. Forty percent of entrants withdrew before the start despite 275 starters. The event drew 70,000 spectators as near-freezing water and rising sun shaped a dramatic morning. Notable figures included Clarence Ross, J. H. Hawkins, Vierkoetter, Summers, and Burdette, with Hertle’s withdrawal noted.
Cross-Continental air derby underway as early setbacks hit 33 of 37 starters. Edward Rawland in a Cessna monoplane led to Norton Field Columbus arriving 11:08 a.m. from McKeesport.
