Pilot clings to exterior stairs after fall from plane

Henry Dempsey, 45, Cape Elizabeth, held onto an outside stair sure for about 10 minutes after the passenger door opened midflight, while Eastern Express flight without passengers made an emergency landing at Portland Jetport. He was treated and released with minor injuries.

Gulf tanker war attacks continue

In Manama Iran fired bazookas at an Italian freighter and machine guns at a Japanese tanker in a flare of naval hostilities. Iraqi warplanes attacked a large naval target off Iran as the Persian Gulf toll rose with more vessels hit and crews wounded.

US aid to Iraq in attacks on Iran taps AWACS and spy planes

Right to die ruling in Pennsylvania for terminally ill patient

A Philadelphia judge authorizes removal of life support for a terminally ill ALS patient, marking Pennsylvania’s first right-to-die ruling. The 64 year old woman, identified as Jane Doe, chose to die with dignity after years of paralysis, with family consent and court approval following her February 1987 request.

FAA to spend 1 billion on LA air traffic control upgrade

United Press International reports eight Pennsylvania districts idle as teachers walk out. Shenango Area in Lackawanna County enters day three affecting 87 teachers and 1,500 students. Mid Valley strike cancels first day for 1,600 students amid talks stall. District offers salary gains but resists extending elementary shift to seven hours. Negotiations set Sept. 8 in Northern York County with a state mediator. South Allegheny and North Allegheny districts also contend with teacher strikes impacting hundreds of staff and thousands of students.

City man dies in Ohio industrial accident

Kenneth D. Wise, 34, a New Castle resident employed by Ex pert Crane Co. of Mentor, Ohio, died at the T&B Foundry in Cleveland after falling 30 feet from an overhead crane. Found by a coworker in a trash barrel, he sustained head and trunk injuries and a fractured left upper arm. He died at St. Vincent's Charity Hospital. Obituary on page 3.
