London brace for air raids on the war’s anniversary as Royal Air Force fighters surged to meet waves of German bombers and fighters. In two alarms, fierce combats saw 23 Nazi planes shot down and 28 more counted downed by official tally, with Britain’s defenses holding the capital.
PA Newc observes a long afternoon report from Elwood City where S G Brown watched a large crane wading and catching fish at the Slippery Rock and Comnoquenessing confluence. Traffic over Labor Day weekend showed many cars from distant states but few serious accidents. Autumn leaves begin turning in Lawrence County as some areas report bonfires to collect fallen leaves. Countywide hunting season preparations are underway with signs limiting hunting. Most city and county schools plan to resume sessions. some opened today, others start tomorrow. Dr Robert Meade Petterson and Prof Gerald Nord fished at a lake in Bessemer. a minnow on Nords line attracted a small fish.

International News Service dispatch from London details that Great Britain endures the fiercest air raids along the southeast coast. Despite German boasts, only about 150 killed and 500 injured in eight ports, with 1,600 houses damaged or destroyed. Principal ports largely function, raids mostly daytime and often unaimed, fueling public anger.
Harry Alexander, 79, retired Pennsylvan ia railroad agent, died at his home 406 East Leasure avenue in New Castle after a heart attack suffered Saturday night about 7:30. Born September 3, 1861, he spent his life in the area, later serving as freight agent for the old WNY&P after starting as a brakeman on the Pittsburgh and Western Railroad. Funeral Wednesday at 2:30.
Three persons killed and four others injured in a head on collision near Ellsworth Ohio. Mrs. Edward Lehman 37 Winnetka Illinois and Mrs. Albert Castner 33 Akron died at the scene. Castner died later. Lehman had minor injuries. Castners four children were injured. A motor patrol reported Castner skidded into Lehmans path after veering onto a muddy shoulder. William Atkinson 54 Volant was treated for a severe laceration to the left index finger caught in a tractor belt.
In a tense session within the House Military Affairs Committee the draft industry amendment to the conscription bill moved toward a final clash. Support grew for a modified provision granting the president power to commandeer industry during the five year span of the draft law, as the House readied two days of debate after Senate approval.
The German government protested after a Brasov clash in which a Hitler portrait was trampled during protests against the Rome Berlin axis award of half of Transylvania to Hungary. Romanian forces surround legations as Hungarian occupation preparations begin. iron guard arrests cited. Transylvanian civilians flee to Bucharest as statues of Queen Marie and King Ferdinand are removed.
Mary Jo McMasters aged 16 of Slippery Rock is hospitalized at Jameson Memorial with a collar bone fracture after a bicycle crash Monday shortly after noon. She was thrown when she rode against an embankment and admitted at 1 50 p m.
Giovanni Mastropietro also known as Joan Pietro, 49, of Harbor Street, was killed while picking corn along the railroad right of way near the garbage plant off Sampson Street. A Pennsylvania Railroad eastbound freight and a westbound passenger train had passed the area shortly before, and investigators believe he was struck by the passenger train after becoming disoriented. He was born March 15, 1891 in Italy and had worked as a steel mill maintenance worker.
Teachers from New Castle public schools gathered in the senior high school auditorium for a general meeting with Superintendent C C Green. He outlined reforms for the year including guidance work, vocational industrial education, two levels of achievement, and emphasized citizenship education. The session lasted about an hour as principals and teachers met in their buildings.
London reported that Royal Air Force fighting planes destroyed 1,752 enemy aircraft during the first year of the European war. British anti aircraft batteries claimed 196 more enemy machines, according to an official announcement.
President Roosevelt returns to Washington after a Labor Day tour of Tennessee. He plans to inspect the naval ordnance plant at Charleston West Virginia on his way home. An imminent agreement between the United States and Great Britain on bases in British possessions near the American coastline was reported. Governor Holt Senator Neely and West Virginia officials greeted him at South Charleston from which he traveled by special train.
Six persons died on Western Pennsylvania highways during the Labor Day weekend. Victims include Elizabeth Eckerman, 73, struck by a trolley in Pittsburgh, and George Pehuto, 47, from Brownsville, in a three car crash. In Westmoreland four deaths are listed, with Harry Verner, 50, Irwin, killed after being run over while attempting to free a car from a ditch. Robert Wolfe, 20, Jeannette, died when his car lost control in fog and struck a wall. Two hit-and-run victims are reported: John Qosley, 49, near Murraysville, found with chest injuries, and an unidentified Black man found near the Mission Inn on the Lincoln highway.
Vichy broadcast by Premier Marshal Henri Philippe Petain urges colonial empire to unite for restoration of French unity. He says three-fifths of France is occupied and warns against any attempt to divide the country amid looming hard winter, with some African units already considering breaking with Vichy to fight for Britain.
Millville New Jersey reports relief as the 73 year old Union Lake concrete dam withstood peak Maurice River surge. Flooding from a Sunday cloud burst caused over 5 million dollars in damage and left 10 thousand people homeless in southern New Jersey. Troopers stood on the dam with flare signals as water receded at dawn and the level dropped four inches.
About 1,500 people attended Cascade park on Labor Day as New Castle Trades & Labor Assembly hosted a two hour sports program from 2 to 4 pm. Families picnicked in the grove, with dinner, sports, and dancing in the late hours, after no parade marked the holiday.
Edison G. Bowler of Mr. Lebanon, a passenger on the B C A alive nex flight from Washington to Pittsburgh, died in the crash. He was a cousin of Mrs. Roy K. Graham of 304 Northview Avenue. Bowler had just completed interior department training in Washington and planned to return to an advanced post in Pittsburgh.
At the twelfth annual business meeting of the National Gymanfa Ganuy the Welsh-American singing festival delegates approved bringing the event to New Castle in September 1941. Henry T. Italy reports a decisive success in the Mediterranean against British naval forces and air power. The official bulletin says a British carrier, battleship, cruiser, and destroyer were damaged while Genoa suffered casualties in a separate air raid.

President Roosevelt announced to Congress that negotiations with Britain have completed an Anglo American pact granting U S air and naval base rights on Britain's western hemisphere possessions in exchange for 50 destroyers. The deal includes 9 year leases on Newfoundland Bermuda and outright gifts of Newfoundland and Bermuda with other bases in the Bahamas Jamaica St Lucia Trinidad Antigua and British Guiana. The message asserts no further congressional action is required and calls the agreement the most important defense step since the Louisiana Purchase.
Stanley Logan of Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania, 22, stood ready to leap from a fourth story wine ledge after his sweetheart jumped to escape a fire. He shouted I want to be with her and urged others to go away. Neighbors intervened saving him and two priests including Father Francis X. Quinn who helped stop the suicide attempt.
