Chicago reports an estimate from R L Forney chief statistician of the National Safety council that about one thousand people will be killed during the Labor Day holiday weekend. Some 100 will drown and 400 to 500 will die in auto accidents with similar numbers in other mishaps.

Robert Morris 21 of R F D No 2 is hospitalized in Jameson Memorial with severe facial lacerations after his car struck a parked unlit vehicle on Route 422 near Coitsville. His father David Morris was also treated and discharged. both cars were badly damaged and caught fire.
A Chinese shell struck the deck of a large Japanese troop ship on the Whangpoo river near Shanghai during a major artillery duel. Casualties aboard the transport were not immediately determined as shells thudded into the International Settlement.
Jeweler Jack Gerson returns from a three month tour of France Germany Russia Lithuania Poland and Latvia. He says he will now stay in the United States and prefers bread and water here to Europe. He notes war talk is widespread in Germany and Russia and that Americans are treated politely there.
City garbage truck drivers and helpers who paused work Thursday over a wage dispute resumed this morning after a conference with Safety Director J. M. Rice. The council had raised wages to 55 cents an hour for drivers and 50 cents for helpers, under an ordinance. The workers had sought a five dollar day for eight hours, and after recent shifts in hours the dispute flared again, leading to the suspension yesterday.

Complete registration figures show 15 885 people eligible to vote in Lawrence county for the coming primary election as of September 1. The breakdown lists Republicans 9 758, Democrats 6 024, with minor totals for Royal Oak New Wilmington Prohibition and miscellaneous groups. County total estimated to be about 8 000 short of eligible voters.
Robert J. Totten, longtime resident of New Wilmington, died at 9 a.m. in a Youngstown hospital after a period of ill health. He leaves wife Elizabeth Brubaker Totten and two nieces, Daisy and Elizabeth Totten. Totten guided local ventures including the New Wilmington telephone system and water company, served as a bank director, and held real estate and justice of the peace roles. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
An unidentified man about 43 was killed near Brookfield when struck by a motorcycle allegedly driven by Michael Dorus. The victim suffered a fractured skull.
Tokyo reports Japanese Navy officials deny rumors that Chinese airmen bombed Kagoshima or Nagasaki. Officials say misinterpretations by a Shanghai–based foreign resident fueled the rumors. Japanese press says 72 Soviet planes arrived on the Shanghai front yesterday.
George Bryan a 34 year old oil refinery worker and father of nine children feared his ill child and hanged himself with heavy twine from an attic rafter in his Shaffer Run road home near Reno Franklin Coroner reported. Marian Sampsell found him about an hour later. He had recently received a wage raise.

In Shanghai on September 3 1937 a Sino-Japanese artillery duel struck the United States Marines second battalion headquarters at Chengtu and Bubbling Well Roads. The roof was hit by a shell that did not explode with no casualties. The British steamer Lisheng carrying 800 Chinese refugees narrowly avoided bombardment as it returned to dock.
President Roosevelt and his fishing party completed a 200 mile run from Poughkeepsie and anchored at Fort Pond Bay near Montauk Point. The White House yacht Potomac received an official mail pouch, and James Roosevelt announced the recess appointment of William Dawson as minister to Uruguay. The plan called for a day of fishing off Montauk Point.
