Millions of Motorists Pack Nation's Highways

Chicago report says Labor Day exodus began Friday as millions hit highways for a three day holiday. By 6 p.m. Friday 13 deaths had occurred on highways nationwide with 480 projected to die by midnight Monday, a Labor Day record. Authorities warned drivers to stay cautious during generally good weather.

A late evening lightning storm brought little rain and humidity has been unusually high. Labor Day traffic began early as residents start a three day holiday, with Pennsylvania reporting one traffic fatality by 8 am. Schools Set For Opening Next Week

Upwards of 29,000 Lawrence County students will head back to school next week with most districts starting Tuesday or Wednesday. New Castle area schools begin Wednesday with parochials on Tuesday. Ellwood City starts Wednesday. many county districts follow Tuesday or Wednesday calendars. A new roof at Wampum High may affect activities but classes start as scheduled. about 100 buses will operate countywide serving the reopened schools.

Strikes Hit Two Plants Idle 700 Men

Strikes at Bossert Division of Rockwell Spring and Axle in New Castle and at Bessemer Limestone in Bessemer idled about 700 workers. Pickets began as contracts expired. Local 4194 voted 133 to 102 to strike at Bossert after talks, while 2728 negotiators at Bessemer accepted the basic offer but opposed changes to seniority and holiday pay proposals. Company officials declined comment.
