Local group aids abused animals in Lawrence County
Lawrence County Animal Relief Fund supporting caregivers and rescue animals has donated 2000 to 3000 this year to veterinary care and food. Marilyn Cook notes funds aided a woman who cared for 22 mixed breed dogs and describes dogs ages two and younger, many lacking people skills, some placed in adoptive homes. A foster caregiver in Wear Woof of Pittsburgh helped group raise funds after a lost kitten fund. Dr Joseph Raught provided veterinary care. Two abused cats required extensive care with community donations funding their treatment.

City to payoff loan early in New Castle plan
New Castle will retire a 2.6 million federal loan early after auditors found about 800000 above the 15 percent reserve threshold. The loan from HUD for downtown improvements will be paid off Feb 1 2014, saving about 91000 in interest and reducing future debt service by 225000 annually starting 2015.

Downtown New Castle preps for Light-Up Night on Nov. 14
New Castle crews began Oct. 15 decorating downtown with wreaths, snowflakes and lights ahead of Light-Up Night on November 14. The Cascade of Lights at Cascade Park, a Kennedy Square tree donated by Frazier Tree Farm, and a 7 p.m. parade with fireworks are planned. Santa photos and downtown sales accompany the event.

County Earns Clean Audit for 2012 Finances
Lawrence County government received a completely clean audit for its 2012 finances. Controller David Gettings announced the result at a commission meeting, crediting the treasurer’s and controller’s offices for smooth operations and noting minor past findings were resolved. The audit by Zelenkofske Axelrod LLC was filed with the prothonotary and the state. The report is online at co.lawrence.pa.us.
