Women sew plastic bags into mats for homeless
Joanne Kalacinski and Carol Kratsas of Epworth United Methodist Church led a community outreach effort in Lawrence County to crochet mats for the homeless using recycled plastic bags. Dozens of volunteers from Challenges Options in Aging and Catholic Charities help weave six by two foot mats that require about 500 bags and 50 hours per mat. The mats provide a waterproof barrier and can be rolled for carry, with mats lasting several months.
