In San Francisco two city leaders were killed as Mayor George Moscone and Harvey Milk were shot. Dan White, a former supervisor, fled City Hall but later surrendered and was jailed on murder charges. Feinstein became acting mayor after the tragedy.

Santa in Balloon Crashes to Tree in Pennsylvania
Ed Gotwalt, 42, attempted to deliver Christmas cheer as Santa in a hot air balloon but became snagged in branches about 50 feet up after a down draft. The balloon deflated, leaving him stranded for over two hours near Walnut Bottom, with highway authorities alerted by a passing plane and a helicopter dispatched to assist. Santa was en route to his Biglerville general store where more than 250 children awaited.

Revenge taken for sons in San Antonio shooting
A man stepped from the crowd and shot six times at a prisoner being transported to the Bexar County Courthouse, killing Jimmy Garza who faced charges for the killings of his two sons Alfredo and Eleodoro. MH services to centralize in county center
The Mental Health Center will open in January 1980 at the former St Mary Elementary School corner North and Beaver streets. It will combine the Human Services Center MHMR Drug and Alcohol and partial hospitalization programs under one roof, marking the first time in 13 years these services are centralized for all residents.
