New Castle Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo proposes a 17.5 million 2016 budget that includes a one mill property tax increase under Act 47 recovery plan. The earned income tax drops to 2.1 percent for residents and 2.0 percent for nonresidents, with a 20 cent blue bag fee rise to 2.20.
Harrisburg AP A state lawmaker urged colleagues to back a Judiciary Committee investigation into Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane. Rep. Garth Everett R Lycoming said about a dozen signed on after circulating a memo. Kane faces criminal charges and a temporary license suspension amid disclosure claims. She called the move premature. Everett plans to introduce a resolution to authorize the probe. impeachment would begin in the House and proceed to the Senate. A Senate report dueWednesday considers another removal path under a governor involvement provision.
The City Rescue Mission and volunteers provided Thanksgiving baskets to over 400 local families in New Castle. Executive director Kevin A. Green noted hunger affects many, with about 1,000 to 1,500 people fed. Distribution occurred Tuesday from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Sankey Youth Center Building, where boxes held cereal, onions, potatoes and more. Volunteers loaded boxes into cars as church and business partners organized drives and eligibility signups.
Rev. Nathan Loudon of First Presbyterian Church New Castle urged the YMCA Tom Robinson Memorial Breakfast attendees to turn gratitude into action. He said joy grows by giving time talent and treasure year round and noted a crowd of about 75 in the YMCA gymnasium.
