An Associated Press-GfK survey shows 93 percent will spend less or about the same as last year, with 50 percent experiencing debt related stress and 22 percent greatly stressed. Cash payments rise to 80 percent, prompting tighter shopping and smaller gifts as families cope with cutbacks and job changes.
Retailers enter the holiday season with leaner inventories after last year’s 3.4 percent sales drop. The National Retail Federation forecasts average household spending at 683 dollars, down 23 dollars from last year, with total sales dipping about 1 percent. The hearing to decide whether 12 year old Jordan Brown will be tried as an adult has been continued. A transfer to juvenile court was planned for Dec 10 but no new date is set. Attorneys cited unavailability of Dr. Kirk Heilbrun and courthouse scheduling conflicts due to holidays. Brown is charged with two counts of homicide in the Feb 20 shooting of his father’s pregnant fiancée, Kenzie Houk, and has been held at the Edmund L. Thomas Adolescent Center in Erie since March 2.
A Robert Wood Johnson Foundation poll shows most Americans follow the Washington debate closely but expect little personal effect. About 57 percent expect no change in access to medical care and 61 percent expect their finances to stay the same. Among those predicting change, 28 percent foresee worse access and 27 percent foresee worse finances, with smaller shares expecting improvement.
