Soviet radio acknowledged a Russian retreat in parts of the Moscow defense zone while claiming a major victory west of Rostov. Officials said Moscow defenses held firm as Nazis pressed with tanks and infantry, reporting 55 enemy tanks and 46 aircraft shot down on one Rostov sector.
The White House announced that U S Army troops will occupy Dutch Guina to secure the Bauxite mines supplying 60 percent of U S aluminum. The move follows talks with the Dutch government in exile and Brazilian concurrence, with troops to be withdrawn as danger ends or at war’s end.
The U S consulate at Sai Gon in French Indo China was wrecked by a bomb last night. No staff were injured according to the State Department in Washington. Consul Sidney H Browne vice consul Kingsley W Hamilton and clerk Carolyn C Jacobs named among staff.

Two convicts from western Pennsylvania recaptured within 72 hours of fleeing Rockview Penitentiary were held in Centre County jail pending arraignment. John Tracy 25 of Farrell robbery two to four years and John Kelley 23 Fredericktown second degree murder 10 to 20 years. they faced doubled sentences for prison breach after guards caught them at Port Mathilda while waiting for a train.
Fifteen miners were injured, four seriously, in a stone fall at the Rail and River mine in Powhatan Bellaire Ohio. The accident happened as cars were hauling the night shift to the surface at 7 30 a m.
A fire caused by an overheated furnace at 1223 East Washington Street Edenburg damaged the Covert business block. Loss was estimated at 15000 with only part insured. Five fire companies fought the two hour blaze through dense smoke hindering access. Residents in two apartments were evacuated.

Two condemned murderers were executed in the electric chair at Rockview penitentiary early today in Bellefonte Pennsylvania. Harold Frisbie, 33, a Bucks County farmer, died at 12 40 a m after being sentenced for the hitchhike slaying of Edward Lee in October 1940. Fred Lee, 26, of Pittsburgh, who killed Frank Akerson during a street holdup in June 1940, followed Frisbie to the chair at 12 34 a m. Jones had written dozens of letters to friends and relatives while awaiting transfer to Rockview.
