Cypriot ship sinks near Ashdod with most crew missing
In Ashdod, Israel, a 4,000-ton Cypriot merchant ship named Annette sank after a storm. Twenty four crew were aboard. 21 believed drowned. Nine bodies recovered and three rescued with light injuries. Tarbormaster Mike Ranel said the ship arrived near the breakwater and Israeli repairmen were aboard to fix the engine while awaiting cargo unloading. Flare signals were seen at 1:15 a.m. Emergency responders could not reach the vessel initially.
