Wilmington Finance Director William E. Thompson introduces a resolution to borrow up to 200000 as a tax anticipation loan and re enact the 1964 real estate tax millage. The plan follows a prior year borrowing and a 1964 budget similar to 1662011 with hospital benefits eyed for 260 employees.
President Kennedy urged Cubans to topple Fidel Castro and pledged prompt U S backing for any Latin American country resisting a Communist takeover. He warned against a right wing successor and insisted U S aid would be offered to restore Cuban sovereignty shaped by the Cuban people.
Gov William Scranton and Pennsylvania Railroad Board Chairman Stuart Chambers conferred about the proposed merger with the New York Central Railroad. Details were not disclosed as talks continued, following formal opposition filed earlier with the Interstate Commerce Commission.
Wisconsin state Sen. Richard Zaborski a bachelor blocked a proposed raise in marriage license fees from three to four dollars. William W. Shope aged 17 of 624 West Madison Avenue had seven charges waived into court at a hearing before Alderman Howard B. Hanna. The alleged crimes include aggravated assault on a police officer burglary and various counts of attempted murder and firearm violations. Bond set at 22 000 total with Shope held on 15 000 cash or 30 000 property bond. Case will go to December grand jury. Defense counsel Alvah M. Shumaker. He is expected to plead not guilty to additional counts of shooting into homes and cars this summer.
Ellwood City Area schools may extend days beyond 180 with a steady rise toward longer hours. Director of instruction Charles J. Barnhart cites a balanced program and extra teaching load, aligning with Stanford professor Dwight Allen who favors 8 am to 5 pm hours and in-school activities.
Alfred Oponowicz, 37, sought by state police for a 1961 Gaylord's burglary attempt, is now on the FBI national wanted list for unlawful interstate flight to avoid prosecution and a 1962 Cleveland Trust Co. robbery. He disappeared Feb 4 during his Cleveland trial and is described as extremely dangerous with a machine gun in his car.
A four member committee in Neshannock Township works toward establishing a sewer authority with five proposed members and five alternates. Supervisors seek approval at a special meeting while a federal agency requires resubmission of over one million dollars in Accelerated Public Works funds for a sewer system and treatment plant.
