Mass prison escape from West Virginia Penitentiary shocks state
Fifteen inmates fled the West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville. One suspect James Collins was found dead in a car in Waynesburg Pennsylvania. An off duty trooper Philip Kesner was killed during the pursuit. Seven prisoners remained at large while four others were captured. Police surrounded the area and launched a major cross state hunt with roadblocks on major routes. Names of several fugitives and their home counties were released as the manhunt continued.

Man kills self and girlfriend in Wayne Township tragedy
Two people died in an apparent double suicide in Wayne Township. Daniel A. Schowalder, 24, of Magee Road Portersville RD 2, died from a head wound after shooting Shelly Ann Carver, 19, of Ellwood City RD 1, at their residence. State Police and Coroner Howard Reynolds confirmed the details at the scene.

UPI reports a $337,500 out-of-court settlement awarded to the Greenfield family of Thomas Greenfield in the 1977 New Castle Holiday Inn fire. The district shows a June 30 deficit of 926,620 after aggressive cuts and a 15 mill tax increase.
