U S Rep Frank M Clark won a 19th term with a slimmer margin. Unofficial totals show Clark 97 002 and Gary A Myers 76 574, a gap reduced by more than half from 1970. Myers’ showing signals Clark’s vulnerability and possible decline in 1974.
In Pittsburgh, Democrats hold a 26 to 24 Senate majority after a Nixon landslide. Incumbent losses include Herbert McGlinchey and Donald Westerling, while Franklin L. Kury and James F. Ross won seats. The race reflected party splits and reapportionment effects amid a broad electoral shift.
State Rep. Donald W. Fox of Enon Valley returns to the House with an easy victory over Ellwood City Democrat Bruce Knechtel, boosting Republicans to a 105-96 majority. Fox’s win covers Lawrence County and parts of Mercer County, with Mercer votes narrowing margins. Thomas J. Fee, unopposed in New Castle areas, also secures a third term as Democrats hold no opposition. Reorganization of the House expected in November to reflect new control.
United Press International reports the GOP expanded to at least 106 seats in the Pennsylvania House, seizing control from Democrats who held it four years. A Nixon landslide helped Republicans unseat seven incumbents and capture 11 open-seat districts, while two GOP incumbents lost. With two races undecided, the split stood near 106 Democrat 95 Republican. The shift signals a personal defeat for Gov. Milton J. Shapp as Republicans targeted anti-Shapp sentiment in most districts.
An 11,000-ton freighter swept into the Sidney Lanier Bridge near Brunswick Georgia. Five people were dead and at least five others missing as rescue divers searched the 37-foot deep river. Ten people were plucked from the water as the ship drifted into the bridge during a tow and the bridge collapsed trapping cars. Passengers, including honeymooning couples, described a sudden crash and rush of water while crews worked to free victims and assess wreckage with the bridge valued at about one million dollars.
Saigon Foreign Minister Tran Van Lam called Nixon's re election happy news and said it guarantees unchanged U S policy on Vietnam. He praised Nixon as a very good friend while opposing Democratic challenger George S McGovern for criticizing President Thieu and vowing immediate withdrawal of U S support if elected.
UPI reports U S air strikes over North Vietnam fell to 20 on Tuesday, the lowest since the round-the-clock bombing resumed. Only one B 52 raid occurred, and all 20 missions used swing wing F111s from Thailand. One F111 with two crewmen was lost, the third such loss in six weeks. Ellwood City to receive 87292 in federal revenue sharing funds. Lawrence County units total 1609012 with 480244 to county government, 679445 to New Castle, 29453 to New Wilmington.

Dr. Raymond G. Tronzo, 30, an orthopedic surgery associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, is undergoing psychiatric tests after charges he plotted to have his estranged wife, Dr. Joan Short, 41, killed. A preliminary hearing was continued to complete testing as prosecutors say there was no love motive.
British troops detained two more leaders of the Provisional wing of the Republican Army at a roadblock in Belfast. The arrests lift total Provisional detentions to over 50 and leave most of the group in disarray. In Londonderry, tips to the army led to 27 commanders and 25 rank and file arrests in five weeks, destroying the local network.
Ohioans voted by more than two to one to keep the personal and corporate income taxes and forgo future ratification. With 90 percent of polls in, 2,250,865 opposed repeal and 1,017,389 supported it. Pro tax forces said rejection showed trust in leaders to spend wisely.
In Rabat today 43 men were found guilty for participating in an abortive plot to assassinate King Hassan II. Eleven air force officers including deputy commander Lt. Col. Mohamed Amekrane faced death on Tuesday as part of a broader trial of 220 suspects for the Aug. 14 jet attack in France.
