A cloudy windy day in Western Pennsylvania turns colder with light rain or drizzle then scattered snow flurries this afternoon into tonight. Highs reach the upper 30s to around 40, with lows in the 20s to mid 30s, followed by continued cold and snow flurries on Saturday especially in northern areas.
Two members of the International Commandos for Greece seized an Olympic Airways jet with 130 aboard. They forced a Paris leg to return to Paris after takeoff for Athens, distributed anti junta tracts, and were arrested on landing. The group identified as Umberto Giovine and Maurizio Panichi of Florence.
Five Warsaw Pact troops from the occupation of Czechoslovakia defect to Sweden, seeking political asylum. A corporal and four privates, all 21, hid in an apartment before police confirmed the defection and offered assurance they would not be expelled. They said they were shocked by the invasion and could not silence their conscience.
Washington reports Nixon begins a cautious transition to a Republican White House after a close election. He plans no cabinet announcements before December 5 and may send representatives abroad as transfers of power proceed. Electoral and party counts show Nixon with 302 electoral votes and a GOP edge in Senate while Democrats hold House.

United States launches Pioneer 9Q a solar weather satellite aboard a Delta rocket to monitor solar radiation storms for Apollo astronauts. The 148 pound craft joins three others circling the sun and feeds space weather data to Boulder amid preparations for Apollo 8 Christmas flight.
