United Press reports Interstate Commerce Commission figures show five thousand killed and 76 286 injured in rail accidents for the year ending June 30. Comparisons reveal increases across most categories with passenger deaths and derailments up 17 percent from 1905. Last quarter totals: 1 065 killed and 18 646 injured.
At a New Brighton Racers' Association meeting a committee was set to drum up interest in the upcoming state convention to be held here next summer. A plan for Beavercounty Day at Cascade Park during the event was proposed. The blast wrecked part of the open hearth plant and caused widespread panic.
Wireless reports from New York say the Lusitania, the largest steamship afloat, is two and a half hours faster to New York than its best time from Queenstown. Passengers are excited and bets are placed on the run with engine room crews promised rewards. actress Mrs Patrick Campbell has pledged $500 to the crew if the ship reaches Sandy Hook before Thursday night.

Harry C. Washabaugh a 30 year old brakeman turned bigamist hanged himself in his county jail cell last night. Sheriff Howe found the body this morning after Washabaugh had shielded his movements with an overcoat and tied a handkerchief to a cell hook. He had posed as single to court Miss Ida Briggs of Houston and wed her at Pittsburg last Thursday before his arrest following the groom’s double life.
London banks raise the Bank of England rate to seven percent attracting French gold and offsetting losses from shipments to America. New York bankers order seven and a half million dollars of immediate English gold. Paris raises the Bank of France discount rate to four percent, after a prior 8.5 percent since March.
