A wintry blast from Lake Erie brought four to eight inches of snow in a narrow belt of northwestern Pennsylvania. Corry recovered from the snowfall as temperatures fell to the low 30s across the region yesterday.
Today brings increasing cloudiness and wind with mild temperatures reaching the 50s to mid 60s. Tonight and Sunday remain mostly cloudy and windy with colder air, possible snow flurries and locally heavy squalls near Lake Erie. Overnight low in the upper 20s to mid 30s. Sunday highs in the 30s.
The high court heard opponents seek to block the underground five megaton Amchitka blast to test the Safeguard ABM system amid fears of earthquakes, tsunamis, and radiation while the government defends the project and sets a 5 p.m. EST deadline.
Mr and Mrs Paul Shannon were honored for their Union Area High School football legacy as seven sons played for the Scotties from 1959 to 1971. Kirk Wesley Brennaman sixteen of 1506 West State Street died after a one car crash on Means Road near the Lawrence County line. A seventeen year old passenger James Budai was hospitalized. Brennaman, a Union Area High student and Methodist Youth member, was pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m. Details report his car veered off the berm hitting two oaks after failing to negotiate a right curve. Funeral services are set for Monday at the Howard H. Reynolds Funeral Service with burial in Graceland Cemetery.
UHURU Inc received a HUD invitation to apply for federal funds to build single family homes. The non profit sponsor in the State Street and Willard Avenue area expects to file documents with the FHA within ten days.
Six Congressmen and two state lawmakers review Pennsylvania reapportionment after 1970 census. Allegheny County appears to lose one seat, Philadelphia hopes to retain all five, with districts redrawn to meet population equalization. Plan considers adding parts of neighboring counties and realigning districts 21 25 26 and 24.
The Pay Board met to decide if raises negotiated before the Aug. 15 wage price freeze should be paid even if they exceed guidelines and whether increases due during the freeze should be retroactive. The five union members and the board failed to resolve Phase II issues and have not set firm guidelines for future pay rises.
